Oakland University 2nd Degree Fall 2010 cohort
After looking at colleges here in IL, mostly 2nd degree programs- I decided to venture back to MI's programs. Agree with Firehawk734, in comparing OU, Wayne and U of M- I found that OU's was far more liberal . As for credit-by-examination, I'm not exactly sure what you mean? I can tell you that I did not have the math course req'd and they are allowing me to take a proficiency exam to satisfy the requirement. Aside from that, I have several science, 1 psych course and the 3 NURS courses left to complete for pre-req's. Not bad at all :)

Any College of DuPage COD Nursing Students with a bachelor outside nursing?
Thanks, I actually met with COD and was very impressed with thier program in comparison to Chamberline, Western Suburban, etc., very $$! 300 Students! WOW, I had no idea there were so many applying! I am to, going to apply w/o having completing Microbiology and Nutrition (as other schools don't req nutrition). Currently, I enrolled in my A & P and Chem courses online out of state and that is working out well. I think if we stay in IL, I will reapply again if I do not get in 2010. But we are considering relocating and have started to look at schools in other states too-

$100,000 in student loan debt?
It is a gray area indeed, as a prospective 2nd degree BSN student, I incurred 36K in student loans: Private school and living expenses, including taking care of my daughter solo and a house... However, those loans are also at 2%, which raises another issue, Why are student loans at 6.8%?! I have started the pre-req's for the BSN (6 total) at an out of state community college (as it is less) online. In Chicago, there are many applicants and not many spots, so yes, one could wait years to get into UIC and still not get acceptd. Or get accepted at Loyla and pay $55k in tuition (only) to their 2nd degree program. Add that with 1st degree and whalaa... Community colleges are 2 year programs for those already having a degree and most often are during the day-- thus, making it diffucult to work and still, VERY competitive to get into. I myself, may be moving our family out of state or moving myself for 12 months to a MUCH less expensive program with a waitlist... in order not incurr such crazy debt. But yes, its possible- even not being reckless (although, I suspect most that do incur 100K may be at least a little) to mount 100K plus

BSN vs. ADN + BS in other field
Thank you MBARN08, So as you see it, those with an AAS- RN with outside experience-- say specifically in Mgmt and a BS-Mgmt may be seen as having unique experience that would be competitive for those positions stating a BSN preferred (although I would not initially be seeking a Mgmt position).

BSN vs. ADN + BS in other field
To those of you who have went back for your BSN (or AAS-Nursing/ADN) after earning your BS in another field; how much support were you able to receive financially in terms of student loans, scholarships, etc.? If you could shed some light on Chicago area schools that would be very helpful too :) Frankly, I would most definitely prefer to go into a BSN program but, it seems with the exception of very few programs, the programs in Chicago-land are VERY expensive (Loyola ABSN, DePaul-MSN, Rush-MSN, Western Suburban, Lewis, etc.) and competitive. I went to a private university for my BS, and do not have enough fed student loans available to finance an additional 30-60K and childcare For that reason only, the ADN at a community college is more 'attractive'. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance

BSN vs. ADN + BS in other field
Hey Daffodils711... I see it has been a few months since this was posted but just wanted to see if you decided on a path, acceptance, etc.? I have a BBA (BS equivelent) in another field as well and had actually only just recently realized that the ADN was an option for 'us' and almost gave up and considered a MS in a business related field (UGGG, just not my passion). If you don't mind- keep me posted- I eager to speak with someone at COD regarding admissions, acceptance stats, etc. Best :)

Any College of DuPage COD Nursing Students with a bachelor outside nursing?
First off, thanks for taking the time to read on :) I currently have a BBA-Management and would like to pursue studies and a career in nursing. WHile there are many options, the MS and accel. BSN programs are very competitve and I would need 7 +/- pre-req's (paid out-of-pocket.. and possibly out of district $$) and no guarantee of acceptance. Further, if you have attended COD you know how difficult these are to get! Bonus too that COD is significantly less than the private colleges BSN programs-- and pay seems nearly same with RN designation. That being said, I am seriously looking at the ADN Program at COD. After just 2 pre-req's (chem and a&p I) I could get a conditional acceptance before taking the a&pII, cna, etc. From what I see, I have nearly all the gen ed req's too... Has anyone gone this route? Secondly, if you have went this route... have you been able to get federal student loans for an ADN program after already having a BBA? Finally, in the admissions process- do they weigh your entire GPA (mine is 3.38) or add the additional combination of pre-req's (not that it would make much difference as I already have 124 credits) or look heavily at scores in the pre-req courses. Is there any weight in the application for already having completed a degree, work experience, etc.? Thanks for any info you might have!!!

Rush GEM applicants
Hi Chicagochiklett, I too am in somewhat of a similar boat, although I am looking to apply for the June 2009 start. I am very nervous as I am seeing many of the applicants posting high GPA's >3.5 and several years in the medical field in different capacities. However, it is best to remeber we are all individuals and have had unique experiences which have allowed us to gain experience or focus in one area or another. My undergrad is in business, and my gpa is slightly less- It is my intent to do the absolute best I can in my pre-req work, application essays and interviews demonstrating my passion and ability to pursue this avenue. Best of luck to you!

Is anyone in the Loyola ABSN Program?
Hi I was just wondering if anyone may be able to shed some light on various ABSN Programs in Chicagoland. I'm currently in process of completeing pre-reqs and have an undergrad in business administration 3.38 GPA. I have worked in mental health-psychosocial rehabilitation for 3 years- but have not had much exposure beyond that in the field. Do programs generally view experince heavily during application? Secondly, I attended undergrad, p/t as I worked 2 jobs while putting myself through school- will this be viewed as negative (p/t attendance going to f/t accellerated attendance)? Address somehow in application that I do not plan to work during the program or generally unimportant? Anything that would enhance an applicaiton or pointers are very much appreciated! All the best!
