Any CNA's with dreadlocks, I have a few questions:)

Published

I am curious if those of you with dreadlocks have faced any difficulties in finding jobs or fitting the professional image required. Do you wear a head covering while at work?

I do not have locks now but have had five sets throughout my life and would love to knot my hair up again. I am slightly concered by some comments I have recieved from my friends and family such as 'Now that youre starting nursing school you can't do that with your hair again' and 'Nurses can't have dreadlocks, it might offend someone'.

Thanks for any feedback:)

I don't have dreds but there were a couple of ppl (and even some instructors) in my nursing program who did. They kept them well-groomed & neat, so no one said anything about them..I think they look nice :) Good luck

Just to reiterate the first response, if they are nice and neat, no problem. I like them. And if your personality and care for others shines, no one will notice. And that's what it's all about when you are a nurse or NA.

I think individuals should have their freedom in hairstyles but we have to be realistic. Please consider the working environment is it a place where different personalites/opinions are encouraged or is everyone encouraged to fit into an image. I know it may seem unrealistic but as a traveling nurse I have seen so many units where clicks made it impossible. Hairstyles, language, even choice of ethnic meals were objects of ridicule and scrutiny. It is sad that you even have to ask the question.
