Hey I wondering if there any Cleveland clinic nurses out here and how do you like it???

I have accepted a position on a cardiothoracic surg stepdown and the pay is $24/hr. I start in a few weeks and CANNOT WAIT!I really debated between CC and UH for a while. I ended up applying for both and I was really impressed by both as well. Unfortunately, after I shadowed at UH and found that that particular specialty wasn't for me I requested another interview for another floor (something that they had told me previously to do). Well, after that I found it IMPOSSIBLE to get in touch with anybody. No one returned calls and that really turned me off, so I went elsewhere.
I am happy with my decision b/c I think this floor will be a better fit for me. The ratios on this floor seemed appropriate also.
I have also decided to disregard others opinions on which hospital is better to work for, it is too subjective. My experiences may differ. If the job is that horrible, then I quit and move on.
I am glad to hear you are disregarding other's opinions of CCF. I have worked here for almost two years and could not be happier. I work in a great unit, with a very supportive staff and management. Most of the negative opinions that people have stated here, I do not see on a daily basis.
Sure, there are things that are not that great... parking is horrible, but I think for the most part, things are good. If nothing else, the experience you're going to get here is better than most other hospitals. You stated you took a position on the cardio step down floor... the patients you see on that floor would probably be "ICU" status at other hospitals... just remember we take care of the sickest of the sick... other hospitals send us their patients when they get too sick for them...
Like you said, if you hate it, quit or change units... you'll find something you love, and I hope it's where you start. Good luck with everything!!
I wish all you new grads all the best! Remember though that PATIENTS come first NOT your employer! Do not be fooled by administration/management saying the patient comes first. IT IS A LIE! They are concerned with the bottom line, not the safety and well-being of patients. As a new grad I thought that we (the hospital team which includes the higher ups) were all there for the patient. What a painful experience it has been to wake up and see the reality of it all! You will see it too one day, hopefully not from the vantage pointe of being a patient.
Personally......I am sick to death about the cleveland clinic monopolizing the hospitals in the cleveland area. One of the reasons I can't stand it is.......I smoke.
Yes, I know I shouldn't ya-da, ya-da, but I do,therefore I can not get a job at ANY of the cleve. clinic hospitals/clinics as an R.N. due to their new smoking testing/policy. I'm not saying I need to smoke on their property or while on duty, but they do a blood test now to make sure you're a non-smoker.
I personally feel what I do on my time off should be my business. What's next, if your body fat index is too high (too many donuts) you won't get hired or you can't have the occasional glass of wine? .......ugh!

One thing you don't see in the unit is the great inequities in care that occur on the floors. Money makers are staffed well, those that serve the underpriviledged are staffed poorly. I don't think you can appreciate the disparities until the ceiling on your floor leaks everytime it rains causing ceiling tiles to fall on your patient or a flood causing the new tele monitors to crash to the ground! All of this as new buildings go up for the well insured!
In the unit you are not witness to the dangerous overuse of LPN's. In the unit you are not trying to care for a patient who needs ICU care but is not getting it because the nurse has 10 other patients.
CCF is a big place with little concern for safety in some patient care areas. I too, value the learning experiences I gained there. I took care of some types of patients with diseases so unusual that people only read about. I also learned about the need for a checks and balances system for our hospitals! Some how there needs to be some greater accountability...
One of the reason you may not hear peaple talking about not working at the clinic is because you have to sign a mandatory code of conduct statment where you cannot say anything bad about the clinic , if you are caught talking bad about the clinic you will face corrective action which could even mean being fired. The clinic does have it's good points but it also has some very bad points. But remember there are very few absolutes in life and that goes for the clinic as well. One last thing to remember no matter what always get it in writting.
