Are there any assisted living directors who care to share stress level? I'm an LVN I've worked mostly in corrections for 10 years and snf 3years. I've noticed there are quite a few assisted living director position avail (I'm in cali) I was considering applying? Is the stress level and work load comparable to SNF? Thanks for any input!

Hi, there. Welcome to Allnurses.com! We moved your post to the Geriatric/LTC Nursing forum with the hope that it will attract some responses that will answer your questions about assisted living employment. Good luck to you!

I would not recommend ALF nursing. I was a DON for several years and the stresses of the job almost drove me into a psych unit. You are responsible 24/7/365 for all of the residents and your care staff, meaning your time is never really your own. You have to make sure your department is survey-ready at all times, run interference between staff and residents/families, work with outside agencies (home health, hospice, PT/OT and so on), order supplies, attend service plan meetings, investigate incidents (it's not unusual for an 80-bed ALF to have 30 falls in a month), and be in constant contact with your administrator so you don't get admissions who are inappropriate for assisted living (residents who need to be fed, who are bedbound, who wander etc.). It's all about the money---the powers that be like to admit heavy-care residents who bring in the big bucks.

There's a reason why there's so many of those jobs available......best of luck in making your decision.

Thanks yeah that's way to much responsibility:bluecry1:
