Any advice for a soon to be retired Soldier?

Published

Pending the results from this upcoming Master Sergeant Selection Board, I will most likely be dropping my retirement packet.

I was thinking of following in my father's footsteps and becoming an RN. I am also looking into the Paramedic field. What I need to find is a program that will have me certified and working within 2.5 years. I figure thats about as long as I can go on a reduced income (while in school). What are the pros and cons for RN vs Paramedic? I am only considering a 2 year degree RN, for now. I know with either, I should have no problem finding employment.

I will be using the "Post 911 G.I.Bill" and probably have to work part time while in school, maybe as a CNA?

Thoughts anyone?

RN or paramedic:

What do you want to do after you finish school? Each role is critical to the patient, so there isn't really a 'better' choice.

E-mail some colleges and let them know that you will be using these funds. Get the most for your $$. After having all the data in place, make a decision that you feel that you can live with for the next 3 to 4 years. If you still struggle, play rock-scissors-paper with a trusted friend.

Best wishes and thank you for serving.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR MILITARY SERVICE!!!! :yeah:

I think we should be rolling out the red carpet into nursing - or any other career path - for all veterans, but unfortunately this is not the case. You may find that getting into nursing school presents a formidible challenge. Be sure you explore the situation for your area. If you have an option, you may want to relocate to a more military-friendly environment such as Texas (especially San Antonio or the Killeen area) because those schools may be more apt to provide preferential treatment for vets.

Good Luck with your future plans.
