Any advice for New Grad. looking for job???

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I need an advice on what to do... I graduated in May but i decided not to apply for any internship program until i pass my NCLEX-RN. Now that I've passed, i don't really know which hospital to apply to and I'm not even sure they want RN with no experience at all. I also think i need that orientation/internship because I'm very nervous about the whole transition process... any tip??? (by the way, I'm in Houston TX)

Thank you!!!

I would say apply to the hospitals closet to your area and see what they have to offer you. remember they need you and most are willing o train as long as you are willing to stay!!

I agree. Go ahead and go check out some hospitals you would like to work at. Go take a tour on your own and get a feel for the hospital. Apply and inquire at the human resources office. If you know any nurses working at them inquire about staffing levels and how they like working there and why they don't like some aspects. Good luck.

Start applying close to you, then expand out as far as your willing to go. Apply to as many places you can, even for positions that don't say specifically "New Grad". You would be surprised how many units hire new grads without actually, specifically posting a new grad position. Also, apply to areas or units in which you have an interest. ICU, CCU, NICU, Med/Surg, Tele, ED, etc.

I'm still looking myself. I actually had an interview this week for a job that wasn't listed as a new grad one, but will hire one for it. I think I got it too. So its not impossible, just be prepared to bug people :-) nicely of course :-)

Let me be honest with you here- the nursing internships in Houston (especially in the medical center) are VERY COMPETITIVE and I am willing to bet that most of the positions for August are filled. If I were you, I would start applying EVERYWHERE and see what you can get. Also, use all of your contacts that you know to find jobs (go to floors where you had clinicals and personally know nurses/nurse managers). There are a TON of hospitals in the Houston area and there is no shortage of new nurses so be prepared to accept that you might not get your first choice floor. Good luck.
