Hey guys, thanks in advance. OK so i was baker acted for attempted suicide while drunk two years ago (2013) in another state and I'm graduating from college in 2017 here in FL. I want to know how much of an obstacle this will be when seeking licensure. I have contemplated not acknowledging this matter up front on the application since I wasn't diagnosed with anything nor was I released with any prescription nor conditions. Simply, I was young and stupid and don't believe this one time event should define me for life. Things that I'd like clarified include 1) is there any specific question in the application in regards to the Baker Act ? 2) should I mention it openly or not ? 3) does the Board of Nursing go through the medical history for each and EVERY applicant ?

I really don't see how the Board would know about a Baker ACT (it is NOT the same as being arrested) nor any other hospitalization..though many on here may disagree, I would not volunteer any information unless directly asked - prescription medications or not. There would be no way for the board to get a hold of your medical information w/o you giving permission etc- HIPPA applies to us too! Especially from another state. If you were arrested, that is another issue obviously.
I also would not provide this information to an employer either.
You are not the first, nor will you be the last, nurse/healthcare provider, to have gone through something like this. I speak from personal experience. It's done, over with and you have moved on responsibly. Leave that terrible time where it needs to be - in the past.
Thanks for your thorough answer. This had been a topic that was difficult to find information on. Had me worried but now i can focus again :)

Yes in Florida on the app for BON it specifically asks if you have ever been treated for a chemical or mental disorder? Attempting suicide while drunk seems to fall under those guidelines. NEVER lie or withhold info from BON!! You most likely will end up regretting it. They are more understanding of a truthful person with a problem than a person who is a liar.

The Florida BON asks these questions but the Florida BON does NOT have the means to know if someone was Baker Acted. An arrest record, yes, hospitalized, no. Being arrested and being hospitalized (even under a 3 day Baker Act) are two completely different scenarios.
