how to answere qestion in a interview when you have a probation period on your license

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I have a probation period on my license from a hospital that i worked at yrs ago. Their were 3 girls that called themselves the decade girls, which means one was in her 20s, one in 30s other one 40s. The one in her 20s not a good nurse patients complained alot, but she befriended the other 2 that were good nurse and had been at this hospital for a long time. The problem did not start right away, but when it did it started like a snowball effect. I unfortunitly happened to be working with her when she made her mistakes. 1 example was she approached me when my husband came in and brought me a salad and she came up to me and said she forgot to follow a doctors order and he was upset and she did not want to write herself up. I was the charge nurse asked her what she forgot to do and she told me not a hugh problem told her not to write herself up make it a lesson learn and to go and take care of it. Then not even 2 weeks later she wrote me up for the same circumstance, though i never knew it was her. So the write up began, I got called to the DON's office quite often though she did not sign any of them and i did not sign any of them. Still not knowing it was these girls doing this, most people that get wrote up is from the next shift not the shift you are working with. In the end i got let go but for a different reason. Then the DON left the oldest decade girl got to be acting DON. Losts more to this story, but was let go for a different reason, was told to come in and talk to human resources about cobra and she was there and told me she was terminating my employment for med errors. I got laughed and left, I went and applied for unemployment. They fought me on it, when the judge got us on the phone is when she found out about the being let go before she did it. whew talk about mad, henceforce she turned me in to the state. I could have fought it according to the lady who came to my home, but she said the hospital had more money than i did and my license would be suspended untill it went to court. I was put on probation and had to do 3 different CEU's. Never lost any of my priveleges to practice. I never had problems getting a job untill now the state said i have a unemcombered license. The minute they hear med errors they shut down. I do not know how to explain it without going on and on does anyone know how to go about this without me have to go on and on because it does not help.

I'm completely confused .

I know that is why its hard to explain, i will try to simplify it. The 3 girls wanted me gone due to the youngest was not a good nurse and her patients were not happy with her care. I had to cover for her on more than 1 occasion seeing how I was the charge nurse. Example: I was giving 1 of my patients her meds when a little old lady came in and asked me if i could get her car and bring it around she needed to go home and get the milk off her front porch before it spoils. Talked to the young decade girl told her we should move her to a bed by the nurses station where we can keep a eye on her and move a pt that is oriented down. She asked me if she should call her family it was 9:00pm, I asked if they wanted to be notified if any changes, she said yes they are very protective, told her to call them. about 10 min later a young girl is running towards us, looked around the little decade gone. This girl yelling were is my grandma and running all over the place, it was just me and the unit secretary. We asked what her grandmothers name was she cont to run and yell till asked if they pt sitting by the desk was her grandmother and it was. who just happened to be the little decade pt that we were moving closer for her confusion. When the rest of the family got there they were all yelling that they were sueing the hospital for negligence for at least 15 min, I waited for the little one to come back never did, another nurse put her Iv back in, and as charge nurse i went in and smoothed everything down. Then the little one returns and called 2nd decade girl and said her pt did not want her to be her nurse anymore that she wanted me. I told her to tell the rest of the story, she came back with what story. Really, I told her. She said it was her break time. Reminded her i am the charge nurse your suppose to tell me when you leave, and i never said a bad thing to that family about her, i just told them what happened when i entered the picture. See that is why the story is long for people to understand the whole story. Though this is when the med errors started because of the things that the lille decade girl was doing to herself.

Then the DON left to practice as a nurse practioner the oldest decade girl got to be the Acting DON which made things of course worse for me. In the end I was let go for another reason, and was suppose to go to meet with human resources about cobra, when i got there the older decade was there with the human resource guy and she told me they were letting me because of the med errors. I laughed, but i did not tell them i had already been let go, i asked for a copy of all these med errors and she gave me only the 2 that she had while she was acting DON. It was when i fought for unemployment that she found out about the 1st termination and obviously ****** her off enough that she called the state and turned me in. If i knew that it was going to be a fight to the finish i would of just let it go. I got another job before i ever got any unemployment. I just need a way to explain this without going on and on

First of all this happened over ten yrs ago. Yes the part of talking to her in front of my husband was not not appropriate but did not violate hippa for the fact pt name was never mentioned. 2nd of all i never tried to befriend these girls. The problem with the med errors is these girls were the only ones writeing me up and they worked right next to me. Instead of writing me up they should have walked up to me and said they noticed i did not finish running the decadron and i could of said i did finish it that is back prime. Why else would the DON and the Physcians side with me. My story is confusing i get that but i was asking how to tell it because getting a job these days are harder than they used to be. I got a job right after that job i did my ceus and probation and my license is in good standing. Try to not be so judgemental when responding.

Is English your second language because your story is incredibly hard to follow. I want to offer advice but I really don't know what is going on.

This sounds like something out of a soap opera.

im still wondering why you allow med errors and other patient issues slide under the bus for the young "decade girl" when you were charge nurse.

I found this very helpful. Keep it short and to the point. Thank you

Try preparing a straight forward answer for example; I was let go from my previous employer due to a medication error, the patient was not harmed and I learned a valuable lesson. My license was put on probation while I completed three CEUs, the CEUS were 1 (list) 2 (list) and 3 (list). My license has been in good standing since completing the CEUs (date). I can assure you the error never happened prior to this one incident and it will never happen again.

It sounds like you moved on and met all the requirements, have a license in good standing. I don't know if you need to be so worried about explaining this again, except what you quoted above.

If you have a 'ding' against your license, they must all show up for future employers then? And during interviews, a person needs to be able to explain them.

Short and sweet and ten years ago. I think someone already mention 'soap opera', and I've done this long enough to be very suspicious that they get ideas from us for sure. But you never want to sound like you are explaining with that much detail and interpretation. The longer you go on, the worse you look (even if everything you say is true). That's just basic interview advice. And not to make light of it but I think I worked with the Decade girls in my last job. They don't like each other any more and the biggest Decade girl retired thank.God.

Best of luck in your new job, I hope the new crew is a better crew than that one :)
