Ok,I just had a job interview that I sort of blew due to "too much assertiveness and honesty",i think.. I'm really having a hard time answering questions coz im always caught between giving the truth or giving a lie but i know that's what an HR would like to hear...I am afraid that too much honesty wont get me any job at all...But on the other hand,I feel guilty when i lie...
So how do you answer questions like:
1. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
>>>i know you should give answer that will reflect your desire to stay in that hospital in a long term basis...but we all know too that after a couple of years,we will really go out of the country..so do you tell them that you will go out of the country?coz if you do,then i will show that your just using them as your stepping stone..
2.HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR NCLEX?
>>> for me its a yes but i've heard some people lie about it...I've also heard some hospitals are hesitant to accept nclex passers..how true?
3.you graduated 200_..so meaning you didnt do anything at all for n years?
>>>do you tell them that while you were waiting for any calls from the hospital, you reviewed for your cgfns/ielts /nclex?
I hope you can share your ideas on how you handle common interview questions..
it is really hard dhel...but im trying here...i have been squandering precious money going to job interviews. It is so hard to tell them that you really intend to stay when all the circumstances points out to the fact that you will leave. I think they are after nurses who are still confused and have no plans in the future at all. Because most of the ones that get hired are those that are not sure where they are going. Or they just want to show off their biases...this is really depressing
I have volunteered my services for 3 months in one of the government hospitals and I know that I am very good if not excellent as a nurse. The nursing admin still wants me but apparently they have no opening for staff right now. They just finished hiring for this year. I know and I am sure that I want nursing to be my career. I have the dedication and the heart to be a passionate nurse. Why is this happening to me?
Thanks for hearing me out...or reading my story...I just hope that I can post a happier message next time. It really feels good to pour this, I only have my dog who listens to all my heartaches.
Good luck and God Bless to all of us
thats the spirit!!! convince yourself first, you want the job and you'll get a job.how funny, I just realized that it's "just really lines"...if you want to win over a girl, its not just giving a good line, you should be giving A GOOD AND CONVINCING line. You maybe telling the employer that you want to establish a career here, but were you convincing enough???
guess i have to work on that part..practice,practice till it becomes natural for me to say those lines..:)

I believe you when you said your trying very hard, I know it's frustrating for you and I pity for your dog:cry: Poor little thing:chuckle Just hang in there, god has a plan for you. In HIS time.
I hope DR. Galvez TAN can read this forum, so he wont say irresponsible remarks stating "Resourceful nurses go to the Internet where they can apply and be immediately interviewed through the webcam," what a careless remark.
In HIS time, In HIS right time.
I will make use of my time by cleaning my house and doing the laundry. I know God has a plan. I am just an eager beaver. I am glad that I volunteered for 3 months...I learned so much. I learned to appreciate the life that I have. I got close to my patients, specially all the old folks at female custodial ward...i will go back someday and give back!!! I know God will make me unfathomably rich!!!! Hehehehe...I have the heart to serve. Nursing is really for me. I know that...so goodluck to all of us and God will provide...i know...
I guess its normal to get hurt, frustrated and down. The good side of things is when your down there is no other way but up
to dhel thank you so much for your advice! YUP i believe in myself during that interview. Well I guess mentioning about the compensation right away is not really appropriate during your interview.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. This will greatly help many aspiring applicants/nurses. I will bear in mind all the tips you have given.

Your welcome. Keep being sassy!
Hi guys! I just recently graduated in June, took a month off to self-study and do KAPLAN then took the nclex in august and passed. I just have a question, what questions do they normally ask in an interview? I'm having an interview with the hospital that I applied to tomorrow and I'm nervous as hell (knowing that I don't go so well at interviews, it's making me nervous) I don't have a problem doing what I'm suppose to do but sometimes it just gets me so intimidated when you're in a big room full of people trying to get a piece of you asking you all these questions, lol! and the silence is just nerve racking. Need some word of advice here, I really appreciate it! Thank you!
To HappyPill: I don't know if we could help you here (I noted you're from USA), but I hope this helps. There are usually two kinds of interview: one wants to know who you are and why are you applying for the hospital, and the other one that gauges your nursing skill and knowledge. Of course you want to give them the right answer, but the people interviewing you also interpret the non-verbal cues you are giving them (which is usually the case during panel interviews: one asks the questions, the other takes note of your reactions - how you answer the question, hand gestures, facial reactions...). Take a moment to collect yourself (do not close your eyes nor look somewhere else other than the interviewer! Eye contact is very important here), think while you're talking, and muster enough self-confidence for you to impress them (that they actually know and feel that YOU know what you are talking about), and for them to believe in you that you are certainly fit for the job.
Good luck! I hope this helps.

I agree with dhel28, who obviously knows what he is talking about.
May I add a few more of things?...
Do do a research of the company or hospital where you are hoping to be hired. This shows that you are serious about the job you are applying for.
The favorite question that interviewers like to ask is "what are your strenghts and weaknesses?". I would check the web for possible good answers to this question.
Never ever be late for the job interview.
Speak slowly, clearly and loud enough so the interviewer will hear and understand everything you say.
Always thank the interviewer/s for the job interview, and always call them for a follow up thank you.
And...never ever bring a can of beer to the job interview. (Just kidding, I just want you to loosen you up little bit so you won't be too nervous for the job interview).

Dont go to an interview without knowing the company/hospital. You want to say something like, I agree with your mission and vision... you rank high in pt. care and I share the same values...
The favorite question that interviewers like to ask is "what are your strenghts and weaknesses?". I would check the web for possible good answers to this question. when answering what is your weakness, pls dont say I dont have any. Say something negative about your self and then convert it to a positive. Say "I see my self being impatient, because I want to finish my assign task thoroughly and on time"
Never ever be late for the job interview. - BIG NO NO!
Speak slowly, clearly and loud enough so the interviewer will hear and understand everything you say.- it shows also that your confident and you know your stuff
Always thank the interviewer/s for the job interview, and always call them for a follow up thank you. - Dont forget to do this, thank the interviewer, appreciate the opportunity and the time of interview. I just have a dilemma on calling the interviewer. Calling and thanking the interviewer will work here in the US or somewhere else but unfortunately, in the Philippines this might not work and be a negative. A firm handshake and a sincere thank you after interview I think is enough, calling HR and the interviewer might sound deperate. Probably it's a cultural thing.
And...never ever bring a can of beer to the job interview. (Just kidding, I just want you to loosen you up little bit so you won't be too nervous for the job interview). - dang, I hope we can do this... he he he
