I just received a WIA Grant from my local One-Stop Career Center for my LPN program that will pay for my tuition, books, uniforms, physical, even gas cards to get to and from school. Also pays for the NCLEX boards after graduation. It is a need based grant and you have to qualify under a list of economic requirements in order to be eligible for the program. You also have to score well on a career scope test and the TABE. I don't know if this program exists just here in Florida or if it's national, but you guys should most definitely check this option out! Check out your local One-Stop Career Center and talk to one of the counselors there and I think there's also info on http://wwww.worksourcefl.com. Okay, maybe it is just here in Florida, but who knows, I would research this no matter where I lived! I hope this helps those who are trying find money for school. :nuke:
Cracklin Rose---my counselor said one of the qualifications to qualify for this grant is that one has to make below the self-sustaining wage here in Florida which I was told was $36.00/hr. Since I believe that most RN's don't even make this amount--I suspect you may qualify. I don't know about being on public assistance specifically--I'm not on public assistance and I qualified w/out a problem. Yes, just go to your local job assitance/career center or your local community college and talk to a counselor. I do believe that you cannot be receiving a Pell Grant in order to receive this grant. I was asked did I get a Pell Grant and was told if I did, I could not receive the WIA grant. Hope this answers your questions. Feel free to ask if you have any more.
CPLPN425...my counselor never mentioned the Pell grant disqualifying someone from the WIA program. She just asked if I had gotten financial aid in my previous semesters. I have recieved the PEll grant , CAP grant and SEOG for every semester I have been in school thus far, I wonder should I send her an e mail and ask about it ?!?!
CPLPN425, Thanks so much for the info....I did ask today at Financial Aide if they were aware of the WIA program & noone knew anything about it. Hmmmm, think I will go tommorrow & see whaT I can find out though, can't hurt. I am already recieving the other grants & was told today that I qualify for small Stafford loan that will need to be repaid after I finish school.
I'll let you guys know what I find out, if not late tommorrow, then wed....I have classes in the evening on Tues.
My LVN program was paid for from this source. But the reason that I qualified was because I was part of a mass lay off of over 600ppl due to a large hospital closure. This program guidelines and qualification vary greatly from state to state. I would contact local unemployment office and or local onesource center to see who qualifies and how.

I was reading up on this & have a few questions if you dont't mind. I also reside in Fl....do you need to be on other public assistance to recieve this? Do I just go down to the assistance office & apply? The info. I was reading was a little confusing. I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.
I qualified for a pell grant thru my local community college....but from what I understand this is totally different. Thanks so much for the information.
