Another one, or two, bite the dust!!!

Nursing Students General Students

As the another nursing school semester comes to an end, some of us are bearing witness to those peers of ours who may not be moving on in the program, or will have to repeat the semester.

As this saddens me to witness... I want to take a minute to communicate to those who are not moving on due to performance issues. As harsh as this may sound... those of you are not going forward are doing so justifiably. These programs are easy to fail, yet hard to succeed in beyond mediocrity. If you have failed, and yes below 75% is failing, then you SHOULD NOT be moving forward and the hospital floor and those potential patients you would be exposed to are much safer due to these standards.

Your peers "know" that you struggle with concepts and they too are concerned with patient safety when it comes to your caring for patients. It takes dedication and time to "comprehend" vs. "staring at" the literature to GET this material. After soliciting information from "my peers", as well considering how much time I study to achieve comprehension as well as reflective high scores, a 40hr/wk study schedule is a reasonable expectation for understanding the material.

This is the first time I've read this thread, and it's 2 years old. But, gotta say, you are still sounding incredibly sanctimonious and self-important. Glad things worked out for you. I'll still be trying to help all my fellow students rather than tell them to what they did wrong.

Just to put my comments into perspective, I have been through 1 year of nursing school. Got a B my first semester and it tore me up. I'm an A student. Why did I get a B? Not because I didn't work hard. My father was in the hospital for 3 months and there was a chance my marriage was going to fall apart. Plus, I'm a mom and had to take care of my child. Plus, I'm an honors student and took 2 extra classes. So, it's not always because people aren't trying. Sometimes, life gets in the way. I do not need someone telling me that I should reflect on my work ethics and study habits when they don't have a clue what is going on in my life.

But thanks anyway!

Hehe. This post screams of "gloating". I was just talking to my boyfriend about gloating yesterday. I do have a tendency to revel in other's failures when I succeed at something (e.g., getting into a competitive nursing school program) and they don't. It probably stems from my insecurities. I was actually asking my boyfriend about how to avoid gloating, and we determined that the best solution is empathy. Have you ever failed at something before? You know how it can happen. Empathizing rather than feeling good about being superior to another is the healthiest way to go. :)

Edit: I do hear you though on people not taking responsibility for their lack of effort. That's frustrating and unfortunate for them that they deny the connection between the lack of effort and the outcomes they experience.
