Annual License renewal

Nurses General Nursing

So I recently got the lovely letter in the mail stating its time to renew my license. I was just curious, has anybody had their employer reimburse them for this? I'm almost embarrassed to ask. But it seems like something that should be done. Thoughts???

My employer reimburses the nurses and social workers for license renewal.

This is something you're more likely to see if you're union or work for the government.

The contractor analogy isn't great- no one spends seven years building a house, but if they did you'd better believe the contractor would charge you for it somehow. Probably under "permits" haha.

In many jurisdictions the employer is responsible for any specific, unusual certifications required to do your job. That's mostly because it would be worthless to take it with you when you left. For instance, an oil company paying for a work visa for an engineer to work in Trinidad. The engineer would absolutely balk at paying for it- what value does he get if he leaves the company?

Because nursing is much more common, and taking your license with you has value to you, it's much less common to get your employer to pay for it. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but it's not expected.

I was so surprised to read this, I've never heard of anyone getting reimbursed for the cost of renewing a professional license. It's a condition of employment true enough but that doesn't make it an automatic freebie on the employee's part. Great deal for you, it's lucky!

Just because it's required doesn't mean the employer is required to pay. Consider it the cost of doing business.

i agree they are are totally not required to reimburse. Yes I am lucky hehe :) I feel it's definitely worth asking just in case.

Just want to add on the topic of taxes, for those excited to claim work expenses in their tax return. In order to receive this deduction you have to 1. Itemize your deductions and 2. Meet a requirement called the 2% floor, meaning that your "work expenses" must be MORE than 2% of your AGI which for me would have been more than $1500 in work expenses and no matter how many scrubs I bought it wasn't $1500 worth lol! we don't even itemize our deductions anyways so I cannot claim any work expenses on my tax return.

This is something you're more likely to see if you're union or work for the government.

I work for union and for government and have to pay my own license renewal fees. No such thing as a free lunch either lol.
