I am looking for some advice regarding a student in my class. This student, Nancy, talks all of the time in class! She is constantly asking questions, interjecting comments into the class discussion and at times answering for the instructor! I have had 7 classes with this woman, and I am at the end of my patience. In the past, I have approached instructors with my annoyance, but each time I did this the instructor told me that they didn't know how to handle the problem either! I am in a MSN-NP program with lots of experienced nurses. Many of my fellow students feel that the class is simply a tutorial session for Nancy alone. Any advice?

Talk to your instructor is all I can say. It's a classroom management thing. You'd think though at the NP level she'd have learned some self control. I'm a first semester ADN student, and there's one in our class, and she drives us all insane.
I've had some of that issue being the question asker in the past. It was related to untreated ADD. Now I try not to ask every question that pops in my head.
I never thought that she might have ADD! Maybe that explains her long history of frequent job changes. Thanks for the insight.

we're talking about a lot of tuition and hard earned money being put down here for graduate school, are we not? experienced students in an msn-np program don't know what do about this? advanced nurse practitioners are leaders. someone needs to take the bull by the horns and show some leadership. go up the chain of command, of course. tell, the dean of the program what is going on.

I agree with following this up the chain of command. I am an instructor and it is inappropriate to allow one student to dominate classroom discussions. Seems there is one (at least) in every class. I have a system that seems to work well. Students receive a ticket when they come into class. They write their name on it. If they ask a question or comment, they pass it in. After the ticket is gone, other questions must be asked outside of class. It also encourages equal participation from shy members of the class as I draw for prizes at the end of the semester from the "ticket bowl."
These students are often very insecure. Sounds counterintuitive since they talk all the time, but many of them feel the need for constant attention and recognition. I try to build their confidence in other ways, without allowing them to monopolize class time.

There are two in my program, so I know how you feel. I especially hate it when they answer the other student's Qs before the teacher has a chance. It's like they want everyone in class to think they are super smart. I have them for two different classes. One instructor just lets it go on, but the other will in a nice way tell them to shut-up cuz they are wasting class time. Thank goodness they are not in my clinical group.

Sounds like undiagnosed ADD to me. We had one in our class too and one of my instructors told her to write down her questions and submit them at the end of class. She would ask really ignorant questions. (the unsaid thought was "If you would shut up long enough-the instructor already gave the answer") She was SOOOO annoying. Everytime she opened her mouth everyone in class would do the eye roll.
Now she is a CRNA.
