Anne Arundel CC - past, current, or prospective students?

Published

I am hoping to begin at AACC in January and just wanted to get any insight or feedback from poast/current students or connect with anyone in process.

I am second degree, working toward a CNM down the road, and chose AACC because I did my pre req's for UMB there and ended up loving it! I love the small campus, very close to home, the professors and staff, and I have heard such great things about the graduates from local health professionals. (I sold pharmaceuticals in my previous career, so I poked around a bit.) I was completely sold when they offered me a scholarship which will cover almost my entire tuition cost.

So...while it would have been shorter time wise to go to Baltimore, I am quite content with what will be my great, practically free education in my own backyard! :wink2:

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I have also heard great things about their program and the gen classes that I have taken there were excellent. My only gripe with them was that when I applied they were willing to take a C student that lived in AA county over my beautiful 4.0 gpa.

Same here lol. I go there but I live in PG County so they flat out told me dont even bother applying to the program b/c you wont get in.

I'm a current pre-nursing student...transferred from Florida last December. I miss Florida, but this college is far better. I'm constantly amazed at the credentials my professors have, most so far, most have their doctorates, taught at Johns Hopkins, or currently teach a rotation, so to speak, at Towsen, Goucher, Universty of Maryland. Amazing professors so far. I apply this month for fall of '09 AACC Nursing Program.

Siennagreen, can you tell me more about your scholarship? I'm a second degree person too, I have a M.Ed. and a B.S. Thanks! email me at laura (dot) b (dot) mcdowell (at) gmail (dot) com

From the semester and a bit that I completed I can advise this:

Try to get enough sleep, though that will be tough. Try to do as much exercising as you can even 15 mins a day. You will need it as a stress reliever. Prepare to teach yourself to a great extent-these professors are not like the ones for prereqs. Brace your self for injustices. Use a lot of postive affirmation-dont expect too much encourgement from professors. Its a weeding out game they play but you can win. Get the Suanders NCLEX book for a summary and do the problems for every semester. Make freinds to study with and for support. Take a lot of deep breaths. Best of Luck!!

I have heard this warning before. I don't think it is specific to AACC though. It seems like nursing school in general, is a challenge.

I have a question re: the Saunders review. Is Saunders the ONE to get?

I want to get a review program to put on the Palm and Lippencott's looked like a better deal with many more practice questions broken down into nursing areas (meg surg/ob/psych/et cet).

I didnt use Saunders myself,I should have. It was a recommendation from a wonderful nurse who graduated from AACC around last yeae. She said the questions for exams are similar to the questions in that book and that it is a great summary after you have read the the assigned chapters.

I didnt mean to be too negative about AACC but realistic. They do churn out great nurses who can actually pass the NCLEX, I think 100% of the time which isnt the case wiht other colleges. I had one good professor and clinical instructor and heard of some great clinical instructors and I wasnt there for long.

You are correct in that this absolutely is a nursing school thing. They just aren't in the business of being nurturing which is ok once you figure it out. I'd definitely get Saunders but both my schools used it. If your school is using Lippincott that would be the one I'd get but also get Saunders. More questions doesn't necessarily make for better questions. :) Good luck.

Specializes in RN May/2009!.

I am in my 4th semester of nursing school at AACC right now. You guys are right...nursing school is not easy at all. AACC is definitely a tough nursing school. They have a high NCLEX pass rate (usually 98-100%) and its because the program is so hard. They prepare you very well for what you will face as an RN and you will learn so much in your 2 years in the program. You will get so much clinical experience in long-term care, med/surg, OB, peds, and critical care. We do clinical at a lot of different hospitals. I have been to AAMC, BWMC, Harbor Hospital, St. Agnes, and Johns Hopkins. It's very hard but if nursing is what you want to I recommend the program. It will be worth it in the end!

Same here, out of county, 4.0 GPA after doing all my prereqs there but was told don't even bother applying. It worked out though, I ended up going to PGCC, paying less, and graduating from a great program :-)
