Annapolis to J. Hopkins-commuting possible?

Hi all! I am new to this forum and I am currently an RN student in western PA. It is my dream to work at Johns Hopkins when I graduate, however, living in Baltimore is my nightmare. Is a commute from Annapolis to Johns Hopkins a possibility? Can anyone in the area give me a rough estimate of how long it would take. I looked on mapquest and it said the two are only 23 miles apart, but they don't allow for traffic or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would love info from any current or past J. Hopkins employees. What is the working environment like? How do they treat new grads? How do they treat their nurses in general? What (living) areas near J. Hopkins are safe, family oriented areas? Thanks a bunch:)

Hi - I did the drive from Bethesda (about 45 mins) 3 times a week while going to grad school there (I miss it so much!!). I also worked there in the Onco research dept. However, look around as JHU is not the highesy paying hospital in that area - Good Luck

Hey no problem. I would look at living in many of the surrounding areas. Bethesda is very nice (but $$$). Gaithersberg is nice and not real bad on the $$$. There is a town that begins with a C and i can't think of it now but it is only 20 mins or so away and is real nice. I had kids and did not want to live in Baltimore. JHU is very cool, but if looking at hospitals in general look at Suburban in Bethesda (also a JHU afflilate). It is a level 1 tramua and has a great ICU and pays well. Also, GW in DC is very nice. I went to Nursing school at Gerogertown and did my Masters at JHU and loved the experience it gave me. Good luck and God bless - gary

You're probably thinking of Columbia. It's a development--well, a planned town, really.

A commute from Annapolis probably wouldn't be too bad, esp. since you probably won't be driving during the worst part of rush hour.

Nice areas to live--there are plenty in Baltimore if you want to PM me. However, if you're looking for advice on new developments, I can't help you there. I only like older neighborhoods and houses. There are lots around here!

I agree, a commute from Annapolis wouldn't be that bad. Hopkins is an awesome place to work. I work with a couple of nurses who commute from PA, and it only takes them about an hour or so (of course, I don't know where in PA they are).

I communted to Hopkins from Harrisburg for 2 years. Anything is possible it all depends on your priorities.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could share more of your commute experiences from Harrisburg. I, too, would be commuting from Harrisburg should I decide to go to JHUSON.
