I am from coastal NC and unfortunately there are fire ants there too! I have heard of putting meat tenderizer on bites. Meat tenderizer is also a favorite of local fishermen for jellyfish stings. I have only been bitten once, about 10-15 bites on one of my feet. Some friends that were with me rubbed colgate(the white kind) on my feet immediately and it really helped. The bites hardly swelled at all and were gone altogether in a few days.

Honestly,Honestly, its not all about the money but it will be nice with 2 kids and a mortgage to have a nice stable income. I ultimately decided to go into nursing when I did due to a sermon my pastor preached on mothers day of 2001. I'll never forget it! The gist of it was that God places desires in a woman's heart beyond raising children, and that these are good, godly desires. My family is definately first and I always thought that being home with my children was the ONLY thing to do. After that day I began to realilze that my desire to become a nurse(from childhood) was from God, and that he had given me life experiences and gifts especially for this profession. I began taking classes immediately. Guess what, the kids and family are fine! and I feel much more fulfilled than I ever dreamed.

Sheesh, talk about nurses eating thier young! IMO all you "seasoned" or should I say "cynical" nurses should be ashamed of yourselves. :angryfire The poor girl just asked a question and it seems if SOME of you are pouncing on her for not already knowing the answer. So what if she wants day shift! So what if she is blissfully unaware of how much foot work goes into the job! I imagine that is why she asked, and with the responses she's gotten she may be less inclined to ever ask anything again. And what is with all these references to ER? Did she every once say in any of her posts - I THINK I WANT TO BE A NURSE CAUSE I LIKE SAW IT ON ER AND IT SEEMED LIKE SOOO COOOL!!!! (i read all 3 of her posts and no she didnt) I am a student nurse myself and I pray to God that after 10 years I don't respond to someone with honest simple questions about nursing with the same condesending crap that SOME of you are dishing out. Give the girl some credit, she already graduated from law school for crying out loud she probably has the moxy for nursing as well!!Seems to me she just does'nt know much about the profession, but she is trying to find out. How sad she gets to see this holier than thou part of nursing that makes me sick. Didn't we all start out with the little itch "I wonder if I could be a nurse?" not even fully knowing what that meant yet. The most benificial advice that was given was to shadow a nurse and that day shift would be really hectic for a new grad. I am not so sure what the "princess nurse/diarrhea" story had to do with the posters question but it probably demoralized her to be put in a catagory with someone like that for asking about day shift and amount of time on her feet. Somewhat Sorry to vent , Somewhat not! I am currently home from clinical with the flu and thought I'd hop on allnurses to cheer myself up and this thread just finished me off! Suebacon I am only a student, and 1st semester at that, but I can tell you that SCD's are Sequential Compression Devices. They wrap around the legs with velcro and are full of air pockets, they are hooked to a machine that inflates the air pockets at varying intervals, thereby massaging the leg. I saw them this semester on the ortho floor. At our hospital they are called Kendalls, which I think is a brandname. The stockings something different and are called TED hose where I am ( lso a brand name). I hope someone else answers your question about clotting times, I am interested to know also.

Hi all! I am new to this forum and I am currently an RN student in western PA. It is my dream to work at Johns Hopkins when I graduate, however, living in Baltimore is my nightmare. Is a commute from Annapolis to Johns Hopkins a possibility? Can anyone in the area give me a rough estimate of how long it would take. I looked on mapquest and it said the two are only 23 miles apart, but they don't allow for traffic or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would love info from any current or past J. Hopkins employees. What is the working environment like? How do they treat new grads? How do they treat their nurses in general? What (living) areas near J. Hopkins are safe, family oriented areas? Thanks a bunch:)

at our school they taught the basic five rights with the possible sixth being the right form of medication ie. capsule, liquid, etc.

My brother works at the county nursing home as a respiratory tech. and has talked to me at lenght running full codes of the very frail and elderly. He said it breaks his heart to have to run a full code on 90+ year old grandmas. And although he does the best possible job he can, most of the time he hopes they don't revive because of all the CPR trauma they have gone through. He said he ALWAYS experiences breaking ribs. Makes me wonder if these people really knew what they would be going through if they would opt for all the bells and whistles or just pass peacefully.

My plan is to get some organization! My dining room table is an abomination with care plans and lecture notes all over it. I also hope to keep up with applying lecture to clinical. May it all continue to come into focus. And hey, while we're dreaming an "A" would be nice

I found allnurses on a scrub website when shopping for a lab coat before starting nursing school. I can't remeber what the site was though. I am on here reading practically everyday now. I Love allnurses:p

I lost an entire finger nail to a shopping cart wheel at 7 (long story). My parents took me to the doctor and they kept it covered with antibiotic salve and a dressing for what seemed like forever, it was probably just a week or two. It did grow back and in the mean time I had a cool "ET finger"

I am a relatively new nursing student(finishing off semester one:rotfl: ) so my experiences with patients may not be as extensive as some of you all have. My SON's philosophy is straight Watson and we studied it indepth pretty much immediately after beginning school. During lecture I thought it was a bunch of psychobabble, but when I went home and read through it I thought she had some pretty good ideas. HOWEVER, since being on clinical and caring for some very ill patients I have learned the value of keeping my emotional distance. If I viewed every patient as "just like" my mother, father, or child I would absolutely lose my mind:uhoh3: !! So I have come up with my own theory of nursing for me......simply care for each patient as another valuable human being regardless of race, religion or status and remain emotionally detached so that you are able to provide focused competent care. Save all my warm fuzzies for family members and pets! Hope this carries me through many years in the profession
