Ann Arbor hospital benefits questions...

Specializes in hopefully ICU someday....

Hello everyone,

I'm an NY ICU RN who'll be moving to Ann Arbor in early March. My wife and I just had our first baby and we need to be near in-laws. Same old story.

She's great though, that baby.

One of my main concerns with moving is getting health benefits asap. In past jobs-o-mine its always taken three months before the benefits kicked in.

A recruiter for the UMHS said their benefits kick in on your start. Does anyone know how benefits at Saint Joes and the VA are doled out?

any other advice to a new dad brooklyn RN moving to Ann Arbor?

thanks and lotsa love,

cc

If you are in a hurry for coverage, then be fore warned- the U of M hiring process can take at least a month or so before you get an offer. The VA is even worse- in most cases it is a minimum of 4 months and sometimes longer. I don't know about St. Joes, but UM and the VA can be great place to work for the benefits, but the cost of living in Ann Arbor is on the high side. Prepare and good luck!

Yes benefits at the U kick in right away, with current ICU experience you shouldn't have a hard time getting an interview quickly, SICU, CCMU and CVICU almost always have openings as they are considered a breeding ground for nurses applying to CRNA programs. We had a high number of nurses come from St Joe's because of changes made to benefits and retirement so I"m not sure how promising that will be. You can google for University of Michigan Nurses union web page and from there you can access our union book for up to date information about pay, you would be level C and then go across for years as an RN, shift differentials and quarterly/yearly bonus information is in there as well, the HR web page also has a calculator to estimate your insurance costs, I carry MPremier care and have been quite happy with it even tho I live in a county that is completely out of network because all the providers are affiliated with Promedica. Good Luck! I've been very happy with my position here :)

Looked into the UMHS contract:

Level C with 4 years as an RN=$28.21/hour.

Down from $40.18, ouch.

I sure hope that midwest quality of life (and cost of living) make up for it.

assuming I can find a job of course...

thanks!

If you don't mind commuting then you can ann arbor is crazy expensive even for a 2 bedroom, I pay less for a 4bed/3 bath than most of my friends do for a 2 bedroom even in Ypsilanti
