Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology in one semester?

Published

I'm planning out my prerequisites to apply for nursing programs in Spring and Fall of 2014. I have quite a few courses to get through in one year. I need to take General Biology and Intro to Chemistry this Spring semester. I can't take Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology until I've completed Biology and Chemistry. Unless one is offered over the summer (which I doubt) it's looking like I might need to take all 3 in the Fall of 2013. Is this a bad idea or is it possible? I don't have to work full time thankfully but I do have a 3 year old.

Lol! I've heard of the "unknown report". Lol! We also have to turn in a notebook with all the labs indicating..title, purpose blah, blah, blah! The prof I have is an older guy that's pretty laid back. :)

I believe taking a&p + micro w/lab is possible in one semester. If you have great time management skills and good study habits (you also mentioned you dont work full time) then you can definitely do it. I do not suggest taking micro and micro lab in two separate semesters. The two classes go hand in hand and you can apply what you learned from lecture in lab..the cool part is that you actually carry out the experiment and thoroughly see the concepts live.

If those classes are your only classes then it is definitely doable. I took an anatomy course before which constituted two semesters worth of anatomy lecture and lab. It was a 4 credit course and the class ran for 2 and a half hours, twice a week. On top of that i was volunteering, and had other classes as well. If you opt to take more classes the same semester then I advise you to pick classes you know you can easily get the A in or classes that are not so mentally demanding.

Also, be wary of your a&p class and dont be afraid to ask your professor questions or nag them about concepts. Study groups are great, and routine trips to the library to study live bone/muscle models are essential to reinforce what you have learned. For mircobio, be sure you are on top of the readings and try to correlate what you know to lab. The amount of reading of course will depend on your professor's teaching/exam styles. I hope this helps, if you have more questions I'll be glad to give an opinion

I know its possible to take physio and micro together, but never heard of all three together, if one is offered over the summer somewhere do it. If your going to take all three it will impact your grades unless you are an expert in anatomy.

I'm taking all three together right now (in spring semester, 12 credits total, about 4 per course). It's difficult but will be worth it. I'm only working 12-13 hours a week. Micro and phsl both have labs, anat is without lab. Last semester I took bio, chem and soc (also 12 credits) which it turns out was quite a bit easier. Anyway, it will all be over soon. It's doable, but expect it to be a tougher semester than most!

You can definitely do it! There is one community college in my area (Southern California) that offers what is called the Trifecta. Basically, you will knock out Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology in one semester. Each month is dedicated to one of those three courses. They meet 5 times a week and classes are from 7am-12pm with lab. It's super intense and over 60% of the class will leave within the first week. If you have what it takes and are determined to get it done, you can definitely do it!

Specializes in Endocrinology, hopefully.

I think you'll be fine. I've taken A&P II, Microbiology, Algebra, and Medical Terminology this semester and gotten As in them all. :) It can be done!

Ah, so stressed. I'm in the three courses mentioned in the original post and it's freakin' hard. I accidentally missed an anatomy online quiz near the beginning of the semester and was therefore deducted 5% from my overall grade, which is really unfortunate/frustrating. I think I'll get at least a B+ in phys, and at least a B in micro, and an A in my internship course, but I'm worried about pulling even a B- in anatomy. I think if I work hard I should be able to get a B-. We'll see. Best wishes and good thoughts to all of you with difficult courses this semester!

I was in this same situation. And while it was stressful, I got through it (keep in mind that I am not the best student), will all As. The key is time management. Take it all one day at a time (that's how I studied, looked at what was due when and what test came first and prioritized). It will be hard but you can do it. The fact that your a parent proves that you want it that much more...

wow all 3 pre-reqs in one semester is pretty gnarly! but if your a strong student and a supportive family to help out with the 3 yr old I guess its doable :) good luck

looking for a college online to take anat/phys/micro bio106 is what its called to get into this lpn program 2014

A lot of colleges offer it online. You can even take it out of state. In vt per credit hour is expensive but in other states its cheaper even for an out of state resident. Just make sure you talk to the college you will be applying for LPN that the credits will transfer. I'm taking a&p2 online next semester

They are both difficult classes that require a lot of studying, so cramming both into one semester will make them that much harder. It's definitely possible, but if you want my opinion (based on having taken them separately, which was hard enough) I would try to find a way around it.
