In years' past, we were encouraged to get flu shots. This year it is mandatory. I never got them before because the only time I did I was feverish and sick for a couple of days afterward. I have only gotten the real flu 1 time in the past 20 years! So, yesterday I dutifully went for my flu shot and here I am with a fever and feeling sore and miserable. And, yes, they expect me to go to work tomorrow. Hopefully the fever will be gone. I HATE flu shots!!!:angryfire
I used to get the flu vaccination, but haven't for the past few years and don't plan to. I have a problem with the way management, the media, etc. have pushed them down our throats. Personally I don't feel that I need to inform my employer or anyone else for that matter why I am declining the vaccine, I believe it is my own personal business. As for mandating the flu vaccine, companies do it because they can, and I am certain it is legal, they seem to be able to get away with alot legally. Who knows, perhaps 10, 20, 30 years from now they will find some unexpected side effects to the flu vaccine. Look at the Tdap. For years and years we were told by the CDC and everyone else that after the age of 7, tetorifice vaccines didn't need a pertussis component. Then what happened? A Pertussis outbreak in adults! Years after we started vaccinating the public with vaccine.
By the way, the Varicella vaccine scares me too. Who knows, maybe the vaccines effects will also wane and will face a huge outbreak of chickenpox when these vaccinated children become adults. That would be really bad, as the disease can be much more severe in adults.
its a live virus vaccine, i dont think we need to worry about them getting ckn pox later in life, as its in the sytem just as if they had chicken pox - however - i think we will find younger and younger and more people having shingles earlier in life due to it - which has worse pain and worse long term effects than ckn pox -
my son haing had the vaccine when he was born as recomended - got a weird painful rash- it looked liek shingles that i have only seen on eldely adults ( i have heard of younger adults getting it but never saw it and have never even heard of kids getting shingles, pperhaps i ws just living in a sheltered world lol. -took him to pediatrician and thought no way could it be shingles must be someother weird thing - one look and she said yep - it ws shingles - the culture confirmed it ....... at age almost 3 so dont know what would be worse- just get the chicken pox ( as my older kids did ) or the shingles - seemed chicken pox would have been better from what i saw

I've never had a flu shot, my husband has never had a flu shot, nor any of my three kids, nor my mom and we are all pretty much the same. Get the flu maybe every 3-4 years and it's not so bad, a few days of fever and feeling crappy. Unless our circumstances change I see no reason to get one.
Isn't the flu vaccine based on last year's flu or the prediction of what this year's will be (which is often wrong as a new strain emerges)? That seems kind of hit or miss. I've got no problem with any other shots I needed to get.
Also, I work in OB so my patients are healthy. If I worked in a different department I'd probably give the flu shot a try and see how it went.
