AMNP at UAB Summer 2011 Applications

U.S.A. Alabama

Has anyone applied for the AMNP Summer 2011 term? It's been 3 weeks since the deadline for applications and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything?

They say interviews will be held in Feb. and they will give ample time to prepare for a trip, but I'm worried since its already Feb and I havent heard anything! Also, will they let us know if we dont make it to the interview round? Will they send rejection letters or just never tell us?

Thanks!

Hey! That is such great news! I was going to try and call tomorrow because I cannot register with all of the holds on my records! I was afraid they were going to kick me out or something so I feel better now! I do not know what I would do if I didn't have this website to know whats going on so thanks everybody for all of the helpful information!! :)

Yeah I almost had a breakdown on Friday when I couldn't register and Ms. Lavier was out of her office. I was freaking out trying to call everyone in the SON, but I feel alot better now after talking to Mr. T.

And yes, without this website, I wouldn't be surviving. I'm sooo glad we're all on this thing. I was trying to tell my roomies about it and they thought I was super nerdy :specs: but we probably all are.

Sorry guys for confusing you! I had the impression that we only needed med clearance to begin clinicals

I am almost done with medical clearance stuff...and I am soo over getting pricked with needles...this one nurse missed my vein once and poked around and my arm had a huge bruise :crying2:. Oh well :)

It's okay! Yeah I'm waiting to do my next TB test and I'll be done. And as for that nurse, well, we will be a million times better

:nurse: Yeah, we will be!

Do any of ya'll know whether or not we will need parking decals? I know at Ole Miss we had them and if we need them I want to go ahead and get stuff like that handled? I was suprised we hadn't gotten an email about that after we were admitted as students.

(I know I'm thinking way ahead...but I'd rather start asking questions now, than to be scrambling the first week of class, you know:uhoh21:)

Are any of y'all still having trouble with holds? I completed my drug screen over a week ago and still have the "Needs Drug Screen and Background Check" hold on my account. (Ha, I too freaked out when I saw this on Wednesday and couldn't get in touch with Jacque because I was terrified I was going to miss the deadline).

But-- I talked to her on Thursday and she said that the person who was supposed to enter clearance for the drug screen/background check was out of the office last week and that several incoming students had been calling about that hold.

She also assured me that it was ok that the medical clearance was not completed by last week-- I forgot about the second step TB test, of course, and was a week behind. She said it was more of a deadline for people to not procrastinate :)

So... I hope that answers some questions. But I still want this hold off my account! And I need an idea of the schedule for the summer. Does anyone know what the hours are?

MsMosser--

My husband, children, and I are transferring from Texas. Can you recommend a family friendly place to live that is within 15-20 miles from UAB? My oldest will be in Kindgergarten next year; how are the schools?

Thanks!!

Homewood and Vestavia are both a reasonable distance from UAB and have great school systems. I live in Homewood, but I grew up in Vestavia. But, there are several good areas right outside of the city that are a good distance with good school systems-- Mountain Brook, Hoover, Pelham, etc.

Are you looking for an apartment community or a house?

Meredith

Parking is probably going to be difficult....I tried to apply for a parking pass but it wouldn't let me for some reason. There is a lot we can park in next to the SON but it would come out to be $6/day which would add up so quickly! There are other free lots around campus but they probably fill up fast, so I don't really know what to do yet. I wish I was living right downtown and could walk. Or a bike might be a good investment hah

Parking isn't too expensive- I'm finishing up my prereqs at UAB right now and I think my pass was 100 for a year and I park in the lot right across from Hill University Center. Then again, I paid way more than that at the University of Maryland (250/year or 15/day in deck!) so 100 seemed cheap. But I would definitely recommend getting a parking pass-- sometimes I can find meter spots before 8 am. But the lots are usually full and I always end up in the deck.

Congrats to all of you accepted to this program! I graduated from UAB years ago and had a great experience. I know this is a bit off topic, but I was wondering if any of you would be willing to provide any admission info about this program. I currently have a daughter at Auburn looking to get into Nursing. Due to the extreme competitive nature of Auburn's program, we are looking into all options. I was thinking after Auburn, she may finish the pre-reqs at Jeff State, but was wondering if this will hurt her, not taking them at UAB? Additionally, is any undergrad degree acceptable or do they give preference to science degrees? Does admission require her to take the GRE or Teas (What are these)? Lastly, what GPA are they looking at? Science GPA or Undergrad? Any information is GREATLY appreciated!

I also have lived in Birmingham all my life. The Homewood area is probably the closest area - especially for those with families looking for a good school system. Vestavia, Hoover, Oak Mountain, and Mountain Brook are equally good, just a little farther out.

msmosser,

I paid $30/year at Auburn so anything is expensive to me! Plus I usually take the transit anyways which is free.

inactiveRN,

I am graduating from Auburn this semester! And yes, AUSON is so competitive! I know tons of people who don't get in...

I was accepted into the AMNP at UAB and never took a single class there. It should not matter where she takes her prereqs.

I am going in with a Chemistry degree, but they accept any type of degree, I believe. However, I will say that a science degree would be more benificial. Just kind of gives you a leg up on what to except academically from more challenging courses.

I was accepted with over a 3.2 GPA and was able to waive the GRE for UABs program. So if she maintains over this 3.2 limit, she won't have to worry about it for UAB. However, most schools do not offer that option. Don't know anything about the Teas, but I've heard it's not too difficult. I believe it is some kind of standardized pre nursing test, but don't quote me on that hah.

The GPA UAB is concerned with is overall GPA.

Please let me know if you have any questions once I start the program! I'd love to have another AU grad join me at UAB! Ya'll can contact me anytime at [email protected]

AUtiger,

Thanks so much for the information! My daughter will decide after this semester what she shall pursue at Auburn. The program at UAB looks like a real option for her, especially since we are Birmingham based! She loves Auburn and will hate to leave if she is not accepted into Nursing school there and may pursue a Child development degree in which she was working towards a minor. However, the nursing program is soooo competitive, I wonder if she would have a better chance of of admission at UAB. The 3.2 GRE waiver is a great option and would be possible for her! Thank you so much for the email address! We may contact you if we have more questions.

After these posts, I checked the UAB website again - is it my imagination or did they use to have a 2nd degree BSN program which they no longer offer?
