American Wanting to Study in the Philippines and Return

Published

Hello I am a native born US citizen who is thinking of studying nursing in the Philippines and returning to the USA to work. Tuition over there would be a fraction of what these schools want here. I know immigration for nursing from the Philippines is dead but that's for those who are not already citizens or residents. I want to know if this is something that could work for a native born American? I also would be a second courser as I already have a degree in poli sci. What are the best schools for second coursers in or near Manila.

Thank you

A lot will depend on what state you plan on living and working in. Check out the Nurse Registration forum to see what issues a lot of Philippine nurses are having especially with CA

Many American born go to Philippines for nursing school, It can be crazy cheap compared to USA schools.

You do realize you can go to a community college and get a 2 year degree in USA and become a RN.

I would personally look to go to school in Davao area instead of Manila, Cost of living is cheaper and the people are more disciplined there.

The mayor of Davao runs the city with an Iron Fist.

Do some poking around here. Most of the advice will tell you to get your education where you plan to work. And, this goes for everything in life, cheapest rarely equates with the best. Cars, clothing, education.

I agree with cheapest equates best, I am fairly wealthy and have no issue spending money on quality guns, tools or employees. But getting a education from Philippines seems to be a bargain due to the crazy cheap cost of living and pay rates in PHilippines.

Where else can I get bottle of coke for 10 cents vs. $1 in USA, Where else can I get pack of Marlboro for 70 cents vs $7 in USA, where else can I get one hour massage for $5 versus $50 in USA

I have paid for a couple of BSN in Philippines, and forsee paying for some more in the future if needed. I see it as great deal.

My comment was based on reading the COUNTLESS number of posts from people who got their cheap nursing degree in the Philippines and then complain that they can't get licensed in the states because of issues.

I hear you.

Seems like most are trying to apply in California. You must remember just few years ago the Governor had to fire half the board including the president since they were allowing nurses with criminal records and drug charge and misconduct to allow to work as RN for about 4 years before there case ever got settled, basically they should of all been put in jail.

So now it appears as if Cali BON has gotten stict, which is good. But they still allow anyone to get a licenses regardless of immigration status and from what I can see the state is still not doing well.

Years ago California was the place to go and work and live, now of days with the politics there is seems that many people and companies are leaving the state, It appears California is there own worst enemy.

Just read about a US citizen who went back to Philippines for 4 years to get her degree there, she entered PI using a US passport, her parents were born in Philippines. She never got her dual citizenship now they want 100K peso or about $2500. Now she has to apply in Philippines for dual citizenship or pay fine before they let her leave the country.

Philippines unlike USA will put her in jail for overstaying.
