American RN interested in Canada

Published

Hi,

Im thinking of moving to Canada. Does anyone know the steps/requisites I must take? Also, what is the average salary of an RN in Canada (its about 60,000 here in the US).

How is it like being a RN in Canada, and what sorts of Nurse Pracitioners are recognized there? Is it also important to learn French? (Here, it's quite an asset to be fluent in Spanish)

Thanks!

You need to contact the College of Nurses for the Province you wish to be licensed in first. They will advise you of the process. Your education will be assessed, and then once all the paperwork is complete, if approved, you need to write the CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurse Exam). Our healthcare systems are vastly different, so this is something with which you must familiarize yourself.

Unless you want to work in Quebec, french is not required. Salaries vary by Province and years of experience. In AB, the avg is 32.99 to 48.00 per hour, plus differentials. In ON, the avg is 28.99 to 45.00 per hour plus differentials. NPs are utilized throughout Canada. Are you an NP?

Starting point as mentioned is the college of RN for the province you plan on working in. Next is deciding what route you are going to take to obtain work permission as that will determine what the next step will be
