I'm curious if I am the only one attending a hospital based diploma nursing program? I've noticed most people on here are talking abour ADN or BSN programs. Just wondering if I am alone??
I have a friend who is a nurse manager at a pretty good hospital in San Diego. Just because you have an RN after your name doesnt mean that automatically gives you a job. He is in charge of hiring for his area in the hospital and he does not hire diploma nurses His actual words, "We have only one [diploma] still working for us, when shes gone that will be the last one for us". I was told that they dont like to hire Maric College (non-accred) graduates too.IMHO I could care less as long as you are a competent nurse.
That's my only concern about only getting my diploma. I do have an aunt who graduated from the school I am going to attend, and she was able to get a great job right after graduating. I hope I am that lucky!
You're not the only one, I'll be starting a diploma program in Aug. The program I will be attending culminates with a Diploma from the hospital and and Associates from the local community college. The program I will be attending has been running for many years and has a good reputation in my part of Jersey.

Perhaps it has something to do with your geographic location? In western PA diploma grads are considered a hot commodity, and my school has the 9th best NCLEX pass rates in the country. We also spend more time involved in pt care than the community colleges. I've applied to three different hospitals as a GN, and was immediately offered jobs at all three facilites (one Peds, one psych, one med-surg), and all three facilities know that I am a diploma grad. If someone is qualified for the postion (ie GN or RN) I don't see how a employer can legally discriminate based on that fact alone.
