I have been working as an LPN for the last year in long-term care/medicare rehab facility but recently graduated with my RN and am starting a new job on med/surg in a hospital I am very familair with (worked as CNA for 5 years) tomorrow.
I'm writing this post at lets see 0530 after being up since 0100 (with 3 hrs sleep)--I'm SOOOOO nervous...
Had no idea I was feeling this way before...maybe denial...he he
I feel like because I have a history at this facility that they'll have these huge expectations of me and I won't measure up. At my previous facility I was the "go to" nurse who did all the training of new employees and really knew my way around the job...now seems like I am starting from scratch again.
Anyway just was wondering if any of you had similair experiences the night before your "big" job?

I got less than two hours of sleep the night before I was to start working in the O.R. as a new G.N. I had no sooner fallen asleep, when a vicious thunderstorm, the worst ever in my memory hit and parked itself over my house for the next two hours. Between the torrential rain and continuous lightning strikes, I was a nervous wreck and never went back to sleep. By that morning, I was totally exhausted. The storm must have been a bad omen, for I not only got to train with the nurse FROM hell, but also arrived home that afternoon to find my 3-year old son desperately sick with a fever of over 104 degrees. And, what was my (ex-) husband doing for him? Nothing, because he was waiting for me to get home, to take him to the doctor!
NO wonder I divorced him! :angryfire

Hi Larry-
Congrats on the RN. I was awake pretty much the whole night b/f my first day as working as an RN. I too returned to a facility that I had worked in as a tech/ward clerk and I kind of wondered what the expectations would be of me with the new title. It is both an advantage and a disadvantage or at least it was for me anyway. Disadv. b/c I knew the other 2 positions and could do it myself and instead of delegating usually did just that even when my time was limited. The advantage was that I knew everyone and had already developed rapport with most of my co-workers and knew where most of the supplies are. It has worked out great for me.
Hope that you have a great first day and believe me you will sleep much better the next night!! Keep us posted how your first day goes.
UPDATE:
Ok guys...I made it through the day without dropping! It was a very good day actually, most of the people I worked with either knew me or knew of me and were excited to see me as an RN.
My preceptor has worked with new hires a lot so she basically set out a plan of action to prepare me to work the floor alone--as part of this plan, today, my only job was to be her "shadow" to see what a typical shift is like. Towards the end of the shift neither one of us could stand it anymore so I went to work helping her.
I did not see any potential problems related to my title change--my previous CNA peers did not appear to have trouble treating me like a nurse and gave many congrats to me for finishing my degree.
I am so excited to start learning again--my nursing home job had basically plateaued as far as learning opportunities went.
I just got out of the hottub and checked the post to see if anyone had replyed and now am heading to my newly appreciated bed.
Goodnight all...zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Glad your first day went well. I also have trouble sleeping before going into a new job. I can't eat while I'm in training, either.
Enjoy the hot tub and bed. You made it. Good job!
Glad that you had an excellent first day. You should sleep like a rock tonight esp after hot tub. Congrats!!
