Am I nuts? :P

Hi there-

I'm a recent college grad and I don't know what to do with my life. Or, rather, I can't decide between two things: Education and Nursing! I am currently enrolled in a graduate program to become certified as a secondary ed teacher, and am toying with the idea of getting through an LPN program- at the same time. Our local community college has an LPN program which has 5 nursing-specific courses (med-surg, maternal, etc), plus a few requisites which I know I could get through easily enough. Am I asking for trouble by even thinking about going part time in grad school and part time for an LPN? My schedule for a year would essentially be the following:

Fall: 3-credit grad level course in education, 8 credit intro nursing course

Spring: 3-credit grad level course in education, 8 credit med-surg course

Summer: 24 credits (entire summer) of 3 nursing courses- geriatric, maternal, and mental health

Can anybody help me out? Or even some insight into the business of a nursing intro course would be helpful. :) Thanks!

I don't think that would be a bad idea. If you have an 8-credit nursing course you'll have to take another class to be a full-time student anyhow. It will definitely be very challenging but I don't think it is unreasonable. If you like nursing and teaching and can't decide, just do both!! One of the reasons it is difficult to get into nursing schools is because there is a lack of instuctors. Your educational background would make you a great asset to the nursing field, whether you choose to teach in it or not.

As long as you can manage the time, I say go for it!!

Based on the schedule outlined above you would be far from "nuts" to do both at once. In fact, I wish my semesters were as benign as yours.
