I come here for support and sharing and I like being able to see how everyone else is living their lives as nurses.
But I can't help but wonder...am I the only nurse who is happy with her job and glad she chose to be a nurse?
I have always liked what I do. I have worked in a variety of different settings, from ICU/ER, transplantation, research, outpatient care, management and now telenursing. I haven't always found everything in my job to be wonderful but when it wasn't I either worked to find a solution to the problems or I moved on...there are too many different areas of nursing to choose from to have one person or one institution ruin me, my career or my happiness.
I feel like I make good money, I have always been able to find a job to match my family's needs and I have worked a lot of different schedules...8 hour days, 12 hour nights, 4-10 hour days, weekend option-32/40, 3-10 hour days Q week, and even some varieties of these combinations... yes, I have been a nurse for a long time.
I hate that we are our own worst enemy. We don't seem to encourage the young to seek nursing as a career, instead we disparage it and demean it and in the process show our own selves such disrespect that I can understand why people do not want to seek nursing as a career.
So my question to all of you is: How can we become more positive toward our career choice and how can we begin to reflect a positive message that would make others want to join us?
...Or am I really the only one around who is glad to be a nurse?
I only work for the money. I chose my field of work because I love L&D. I like what I do, but if I didn't need the money........ the world is an exciting place. So far, nursing has been great for the family. I've gotten a job within 1-2 weeks of walking into a hospital and talking with the nurse manager of the OB unit (on my 7th hospital thanks to dh moving us around with the military and school). I've always gotten the schedule and amount of hours I need for the family schedule. Someday, when it is all about me, I'll get a day job with no weekends or holidays....
I have been waiting for 20 years to become a nurse. I am proud to say, I am finally on my way!! Nursing to me has been a calling for me. I love to help people in need. I am sure it will be trying at times, "but nothing in life that is worth anything come easy".
I am currently attending school to become an LPN. From there I will go for my RN. I am 40 years old and this is a dream finally coming true. I am learning that it is never too late. I was surprised to find out that I was not alone in my age group pursuing this dream.
I am the kind of person who loves to cheer people up, I hope the nursing community will welcome this "nurse in progress". Despite my age, I am really 18 on the inside. LOL. :chuckle
Thank you for letting me post with you today.

:) I am lovin almost all the moments of nursing. This site is good because we can share the best, the worst and all the inbetween. It is great to be able to ask questions and have so many people who know the answer. I love my one to one time with my residents but hate the paperwork. I can't imagine doing anything at all. I worked med-surg but my true love is LTC.
I'm a LPN student going through clinicals and I absolutely love it. I love the hospital environment. I don't particularly like LTC. I ask that question a lot of the nurses I am working with and most of them really like their jobs. Some don't, and really need to get into another field. But the field of nursing is so vast, if you don't like one aspect, there are many others.
