Alternate GN Jobs in Austin, Tx (Not Seton or St. David's)

I will be graduating in May with my BSN (hopefully soon to be accompanied by my RN license). I have applied to St. David's, Seton Healthcare, and Scott and White (as of today). The waiting game is new to me as well as frustrating. I have contacted HR weekly at St. David's and seem to be making some headway. I know that Seton won't be contacting me for an interview for a few more weeks. I was wondering if there were any alternate jobs for graduate nurses that I should be looking into. For example, I would love to become involved in home health, but I am not sure where to start or if places like that hire new graduates. I am also greatly interested in psychiatric nursing.

Any advice, insight, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm graduating in May as well with my BSN and moving to Houston. I have been submitting applications online to 6 hospitals so far but i'm wondering if I should start calling the HR departments as well. Did you just say that you're calling to follow up on your application?

I've been in touch with the HR departments with St. David's, they've been relatively helpful. What I have come to realize is that HR screens your resume and what not to make sure you qualify and then the hiring managers are the actual people who will decide to hire you.

Home Care is not a good option unless they have an orientation structure designed for new grads. You need more 'close at hand' supervision and assistance than most home care agencies can provide.

You are absolutely correct! HR never decides who to hire. They provide processes (managing applications, background checks, scheduling interviews, etc.) to support managers that make the hiring decision. However, managers must comply with all the HR rules - and in many organizations, this prohibits them from any 'initial' contact with an applicant that has not been cleared by HR.
