Alternate #5 is an emotional rollercoaster ride

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I feel like I am stuck in limbo. My school takes 40 students by merit, and I am number 45. Overall it feels great to be considered an alternate and towards the top of the list to say the least, but I cant celebrate. I was given all of the same documentation that those accepted had received, just in case I get the call, but I cant celebrate. I am an optimistic person, one who usually sees the glass as half full, but this week has been a rough one. I want so badly to shout to the world "I GOT IN!" but I cant. Getting the call, not getting the call. In, not in. Where do I stand? Reading some back dated posts from my program shows me that it is possible that I will be called. Last semester they called 13. 13! Thirteen first choice applicants had to decline their spots in the program so those waiting as alternates can celebrate too. So #5 feels like a shoe in, right? But I cant celebrate, not yet. I'm stuck in limbo. I applaud those who did get in. I know first hand the hard work it took to get to that place. I am not jealous, I am not bitter, and I am not regretful. I admit it is hard seeing the timeline that was given to those that got accepted. I know when their E-docs are due, when they register for 1st semester nursing classes, when they walk together as a group to take nursing badge photos, and when they attend scrub fittings. If I'm called to duty late in the game and miss all the "group stuff", its o.k!! Sigh. I'll only be bummed for a minute. However, I just want my chance to celebrate even if its late, solo, and goes unnoticed. So here's to all of you picked as an alternate. May we all get the call of our life, and a quick opportunity to celebrate before the madness. CHEERS!!

Be thankful you have a position! I just got wait listed (as an alternate) to my BSN program and they don't release what number you are! I made a Nancy Kerrigan joke with the admissions lady and she said, "Basically that's what we're trying to avoid, that and bribes." WHAT?! Hahaha, gotta love Baltimore.

One of the dean's had stated that last semesters class was compromised of 10-15% wait listed students so in a class of 130 the odds aren't terrible! Stay positive and trust that whatever the outcome is it is the right one for you at this time.

Yikes, what was your joke? Did she really think you were trying to bribe her? lol.

I'm very very thankful I have a pseudo position. Im hearing about 900 people applied, but its a curse and a blessing knowing my alternate number. Good luck to you...hopefully you will not have to be wait listed for very long.

Be optimistic! I was one who had to give up my spot last semester and got accepted again got the spring. During the orientation, 5 alternatives were given a spot due to no shows! There are so many reasons one may have to give up their spot. I'm willing to bet you'll get your spot.

No! She said that there has been a situation in the past where a wait listed students family attempted to bribe accepted students to rescind their invitations for admittance.

This is my number one school I just want to know my position so I can better plan for my coming months. Being #1-5 or #20-30 is a big difference. At this particular school only a small number of applicants are placed on the alternate wait list so at least I'm not with hundreds of others. I think about 300-400 people applied to this application cycle and only about 130 gained admittance. I am not upset with the fact that I am on the wait list, but sure would like to know where I stand in it!

Awww, such a positive attitude. I was an alternate for summer 2013 at my school, but they did not inform us how many people was on the list nor or positions. Good luck and hope everything works out in the end.

@chelsea13 I agree. Knowing where you stand does make it easier to plan. It does sound sound hopeful considering the wait list is short. I wish you luck.

Oh, you will be fine, #45 sounds promising, many people who get accepted cannot attend for several reasons. But even if you don't get called, reapply and also look into other schools. I applied to Washington State University and was given the opportunity to interview, but I didn't even get on the waitlist! My low 3.1 GPA is not quite good enough so I need to look into other smaller community college schools in my area to take other classes and increase my GPA and reapply in a year. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!! You WILL get in eventually :) Optimism and patience are key.

I am sure it was disappointing to be an alternate, but you are one and in the top 5!

I believe you will get in.

Got my call today!!! Im in!!!! whoooooo hooooooo!!

I knew this would happen. I am extremely happy for you.

Buckle up

I hear nursing school is one heck of a ride!

WOOOHOO!!!So happy for you!!
