Alright, I'll start! MDC Fall 2013

Published

Why hello there, fellow students!

You can call me Cedeno, and I'll be applying for the MDC nursing program for fall 2013! I've been excited for awhile now, especially since MDC (and all its red tape) has delayed my intended apply date twice (originally Fall 2012, then Spring 2013). Ah, but no worries!

Right now I'm taking my last bit of classes before applying: A&P 2 w/lab, Micro, and Critical Thinking/Ethics. I've seen many nursing students this semester-- which is wonderful-- but at the same time I think two words when I meet another pre-nursing student: "Awesome! :x3: " and "Competition! :wideyed: " (Not seriously, but in a jokey kind of way.)

Once admitted, I'd love to form a study group. Size isn't quite so much the priority as cohesiveness is (though size counts!). I'd love study mates who like to utilize chats like Google talk, Skype, Kik, etc. for times when perhaps we'd like to study something but cannot make it to a physical location.

I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I love highlighters, dry-erase boards, and discussing questions together to ensure everyone understands rather than one person offering up the answer and others just accepting it without knowing.

Ah! I've managed to turn this into an ad for study mates! :o I'm just excited and hope there are other potential classmates here on AN. Please pop in and say hello! Let's talk GPAs, TEAS scores, whatever!

....Also if you take the TEAS twice is it highest score used or last test taken?

GOOD LUCK! :cat:

Stats:

Expected final science GPA: 3.67

TEAS score: n/a

OMG! In a few days hopefully we will get the email we have been waitig for!!! Can the days go by any slower?

I was reading previous semester & based on them I think the overall scores around the 70s will be on second rounds of email!

Hi everyone! Im new to posting but have been reading up on all threads regarding the nursing program at Miami dade for fall. I applied too and Im waiting eagerly as well! I also spoke with **** today and she confirmed what you all posted that emails will begin next week. Im a bit worried because my overall score is 79 but Im remaining hopeful and prayerful. All the best to you all!!!!

@ohnana I also read on previous threads that the scores were in the mid 70's for people who got in during second round. Hopefully the same happens this semester!

@lexibabi @jayjay We are all in the same boat patiently waiting together!! LOL but i have lots of faith and feel very optimistic!! we can do this!

welcome Crysr! I have the same score as you! Glad you joined us and well here we are, just waiting until next week....3 more days and counting :arghh:

Anyways, in the mean time...LETS GO HEAT!!! :cheeky:

@MaryOr Sorry it took me while to answer, I just took my Med Surge Final this morning :dead:! The AO schedule so far has been mostly M-F. Let me explain, the Skills labs are scheduled for a less number of weeks then the lecture so once you finish and pass the test you will get a couple of Thursdays off. My schedule for the January (when I started) to end of March was as follows:

Mon 8-11 fundamentals 1-3:30 pharmocology

Tues Wed Thurs Skills lab 8-12 (Jan to beginning of Feb)

Tues Wed 7 - 3 (for clinics starting mid Feb)

Friday Fundamentals 8-11 Health Assessment 12-5

In addition to the classes, there is a ATI program that we are tested on also. This is a self- guided tutorial we are responsible for. It counts as 5% of our fundamentals class.

I do not if you guys are aware of the 7 point grading scale in the program. It's not the 10 point scale we were accustomed to! Get ready for it :)

I took out the max loans they would allow me to and it paid for tuition and gave me a refund of roughly $900. Financial aid did not let me submit the letter for the appeal process until orientation when we were able to officially register for classes. My loan did not go through until 4 or 5 weeks until the semester. I did not know that the school has something called a "short term loan" to help you if you have loans and/or aid coming in. I just put everything on my credit card and paid it off when the money came in.

@itsmarie That schedule actually seems pretty doable if you ask me. Thanks very much for the info!

@tati I thought the schedule did not seem so bad too....then I started the program!! Since my husband tries to get as much overtime as possible in, I have to do everything in the house and for the kids. When he gets home from work, I hand him the baby and its study time!!! He is very supportive and that's very important. Studying with a very active and needy 9 month old is impossible so the weekends are out of the question. Getting the hours to sit down and do the readings are always challenging to me. For me, balancing the roles of mother, wife, and student was really stretching me in so many directions! AND somewhere in there I needed a few moments for myself too!!!

Hopefully, you are in a better position than I am family support and responsibility wise. And that you have the time management skills I lack :) As I mentioned before, there are a few people that had jobs while starting the program.

You can do anything you set your mind on!

@itsmaria

You have been an angel!!:coollook: Could you elaborate more on the 7 points system.. Did you join a study group? Do you know what employment looks like upon graduation, as far as, how long new grads have to wait before employed- on average?

Hi everyone! Ive been stalking all the comments. Im so nervous! I applied early february for both generic and accelerated. My teas score was 80.9% and gpa 3.6. Mdc is my only option so im praying I get in. Hopefully we all make it! Good luck!

@Jenesa - the 7 point grading system is where 94+ is an A, 87+ is a B....(correct me if I'm wrong)....it's that "old school" system that I remember using in Elementary school (I'm 24). So 90 is NOT an A...I've been warned about this!

@jq - Welcome and good luck!

@CarissaHalo

Thanks... I am not familiar with that grading system... I sounds tough.

Hey guys I'm in too for coffee once we're all accepted! The wait is KILLING me though ugh!

@itsmarie:

that schedule doesn't sound too bad to me either and it sounds like you are in the exact same situation as me with the hubby working long hours and a needy baby (well, needy toddler which is probably worse lol) We don't have much family support either, both of our families live out of state so it's just us with a little help from friends. I'm still debating which track I would choose if I get in to both AO and FT generic. If you could do it again, would you still choose AO? I know that this is almost a trick question but do you feel like you are able to divide your time effectively between studying and family? My DH is pretty clueless (bless his heart, he does try his best) so most of the responsibility for our son falls on me other than when he's at school which is only from 9a-2p so I would have to arrange some kind of childcare in the afternoon. I, too, hand the baby over as soon as he walks in the door lol! It is comforting to see that it CAN be done though. You go girl!

I just noticed we probably both talked to ****

We sure did!!!!
