All You Ever Wanted to Know About Getting Into Bristol Community College

Published

I just attended the Bristol Community College health sciences information session for the second year last week. I thought I would share some of the information for those on this forum or on the web looking to get into this school for nursing. I hope this helps and answers a lot of questions.

NEW this year:

  • The health sciences information session is mandatory before applying so if you have not attended call them and sign up because space is limited.
  • You must take the TEAS exam before applying. You can take the test at the college.
  • Application DEADLINE is now February 1, 2009 for the Fall 2009 semester.

MINIMUM requirements to be completed before applying (NO EXCEPTIONS. Seriously, you must have these to even apply)

  • High school or college Algebra I (you can take this at your local high school to save money, call around to find out which schools offer this) Minimum score = B
  • High school or college Chemistry(you can take this at your local high school) Minimum score = B
  • College A&P I (BIO 33) Minimum score = B
  • College English I (ENG 11) Minimum score = B
  • College General Psychology (PSY 51) Minimum score = B
  • Have a score of 70 or above on the TEAS exam
  • Attend mandatory health sciences information session

Keep in mind the above is only the minimum to apply. Now the good stuff.

To be COMPETITIVE you must:

Complete all 10 general education courses listed in the handbook which includes:

  • High school or college Algebra I
  • High school or college Chemistry
  • College A&P I (BIO 33)
  • College A&P II (BIO 34)
  • Microbiology(BIO 39)
  • College English I (ENG 11)
  • College English II (ENG 12
  • College General Psychology (PSY 51)
  • Child Development (PSY 52)
  • Abnormal Psychology (PSY 55)
  • Humanities Elective (such as Speech)
  • History OR Math Elective
  • Have a score of 70 or above on the TEAS exam(they did not have a competitive score but stated to not aim for the minimum)
  • Priority is given to students with a GPA of 3.50 or higher

Note: If you are still in high school, please do not think you can just apply and get in only taking the high school coursework. You must complete the college coursework as well before applying. There were many high school students in the session and there are no if, and's or but's about it. You must complete all the min. requirements before applying. I do not mean to be harsh but I would hate for you to work so hard and find out that you have to take these classes and not get in when you planned on it. I would suggest taking the college courses in your junior year on weekends or during the summer, so by the time you graduate high school you will be all set to start, if you get in.

FACTS:

  • Bristol Community College does NOT have a wait list. You must apply EVERY year. They only have a wait list for the particular year you apply to. For example, if you are put on a wait list it would be if someone dropped out that had been accepted.
  • You do not need previous job experience or letter of recommendations. If you send those in they don't look at it and has nothing to do with the decision process.
  • They have about 90 spaces and 1200 applicants

Just a tip. Always be on top of everything with this school they are notorious for losing important documents and information as well as not informing students of changes.

I have been working towards this for the past 3 years and it has happened many, many times. I have completed all coursework with a 4.0 and am applying for Fall 2009. All of this, however, does NOT guarantee me admission. I will never give up my dream of becoming a nurse, I will only work harder.

I hope all of this helps. If I can try to answer any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Yes, I just applied in November of 2008 for Fall 2009. They have the health sessions all the time now. Go on the website or call them ASAP if you want to get in for Fall 2009. Also don't forget to schedule the TEAS exam. I am actually studying for it as we speak. I am scheduled to take the test this weekend. Wish me luck!! Send me a message anytime if you have any questions.

Hi mcb5603,

I got your private message but it won't let me reply for some reason. Yes, this is the first time I applied but second time taking the information session. I was going to apply last year but after talking to the dean personally after last years info. session he said don't bother because I still needed two gen. eds. and my application would end up in the trash. I ended up taking what I needed last spring. I spoke to him again at this years info. session and he said I had a good chance of getting in, but no gaurantees of course. I have talked to people in the program before but that was last year and they didn't start all of this new stuff (like the TEAS and mandatory session) till this year. As far as what I know though there is a test you have to take on the first day of class, if you get in, and you continue to do this every semester. They do give you study materials before school starts though. Also, I heard it is really hard. One guy I spoke with said he had 10 books and that was only the first semester. I asked him if was do-able with young kids and he said there are some in there that have like 3 kids and work so it is do-able but very difficult. He said if you think A&P was hard-that was nothing. But that won't stop me from trying. There are alot of rumors that go on in the college about the program. Make sure you talk to the right people for everything. For example, only talk to the dean or his secratary. If you have more questions you can email me at [email protected]. I will try to find out more info soon.

Melissa

By the way, it is nice to be able to talk to someone else about it. I searched and searched the internet. Nobody posts thier experiences about BCC. This is one of the reasons I started the thread in case there was someone like me out there hunting down this info. You would think they would organize a little more at the school and have a webpage with all of this info.

Hello Melissa,

Thanks for all the info. I agree I have searched for any info about BCC and have found very little info re: the program. I agree it is nice to meet someone that is interested in the program. I really hope that you get in. Please let me know when you know. I will PM you with my email so we can chit chat via email..LOL. Keep in touch!

Wow! this is good, Melissa. I hope you get it. Good Luck.

Thanks Melissa,

I was going to apply but I dont thin anymore. My college algebra is -C and my Teas test score is 68.5 and I live out of state(MA) presently, that means I might not be able to attend the madatory session.

I will just look at other schools that do not have madatory session .

Thanks again, all these info wasn't on their website.

Yercy!

Hi Melissa,

Do u know how much weight on TEAS scores? I passed the TEAS test, but I am not happy with my scores.

I am worried about that too because I am not happy with my score either. When I asked the dean at the meeting, he said there was no particular score (besides being above a 70) that they were looking for but he did say "don't shoot for the bare minimum". I am crossing my fingers that my scores will not weigh as much as my GPA. Fingers crossed.

Please let me know, you get accept or not. Good luck!!

Hey all! I am new to this site...currently taking prereqs at BCC. Taking A&P I right now...I have a long road ahead of me lol! Hoping to apply for the RN program for fall of 2010...wow that seems so long from now but I'm sure it will come quickly. I think I'm also going to apply to the Massasoit CC program as well since it is difficult to get into BCC at least I will have a better chance if I have 2 applications out there. The prereqs are basically the same. May also apply to the LPN program at Diman RVHS for this upcoming year. DOes anyone know anything about the LPN-RN program att BCC? is that also difficult to get into? Any thoughts about this route would help Thanks!!
