The nurse recruiter from UAB came to our school today and buddy, I am sold! I was not aware UAB had Magnet status! The benefits sound awesome. I want to do the internship in Women's and Children's Services. Will someone who works there please tell me what it's like?

RN internship--rotate through 6 acute care or speciality units and get trained in all of them after 6 months, make your decision of where you want to be placed.

On site coordinator to help you find a place to live

$3000.00 in relocation assistance if you live more than 100 miles from Birmingham.

I used to work at UAB and wanted to add some other benefits they have as well

For employees, UAB will pay 100% for 1 class ea semester for furthering education after 6 months of employment

For spouses... 100% for 1 class/semster after 1 yr employment

For dependents.... after 1 yr employment 50% tuition and books if the dependent goes to UAB.

Automatic retirement plan...... in the Teachers Retirement

Voluntary retirement in a 401K

Insurance through Viva UAB.... minimum to no copay for using UAB physicians. If you have other outside insurance (like through your spouse) if you use UAB for your hospitalizations, UAB will give a 25% discount on what the other insurance does not pay... say if you still owed 2000 after insurance paid, and you were in UAB hosp, the hosp would discount that 2000 by 25%.

Not to mention the wonderful education that you can get from CEUs, inservices, and training that is provided. You consistently learn new things, new techniques, major teaching hospital. People come from all over the state, southeast, and the country for treatment at UAB.

The only reason I left UAB was because I worked 12 hr night shift, and live an hr away from the hosp. I also had had surgery and had complications from that surgery. Its an excellent hospital.

I'm in the same boat as KK (OP)...and thanks to everyone for your information! UAB sounds like a *great* place to work...and when the recruiter told me about it...wow.

A couple additional questions (please bear in mind here that I would be relocating from Ontario, Canada and have never actually visited Alabama before)

The city of Birmingham, how 'liberal' is it...I mean, I come from a very accepting environment here (read: we allow gay marriage)...and I'm a tad worried about being strung up from a tree for not being your typical, 100% heterosexual, christian, conservative girl.

How possible IS it to *live* on $18 (USD) per hour wages there? From what I've read, apartment rent runs generally $400 - $600 per month, which sounds reasonable to me...but if I'm looking to live alone, do you figure it's possible?

Thank you *so* much to any info anyone can provide for me...this relocation business is *scary*, but yet exciting at the same time!!

Just FYI..... I got a card in the mail yesterday.

UAB is having an open house March 12 from 2p-5p in the North Pavillion Atrium to "find new opportunities to advance your career", "meet nurse managers", and "enjoy a tour of the new hospital".

Im sorry I cant be of help about housing in Birmingham. I live about 45min-1 hr outside Bham. Hopefully someone can help you with that.

There is no place in AL that is as liberal as Canada.

However, Bham is probably one of the most "liberal" since it is artsy. They put some kind of pagen statue downtown that caused an uproar. No one would ever build that kind of thing here (I certainly would vote against it).

Alabamians are basically very accepting people. As long as you keep your personal things personal, that is all we ask. To do otherwise is just rude.

What you will find are people who will say please and thank you most all the time.

And despite what you know as the stereotype of a southerner that largest number of PHD's % wise in the United States live in Huntsville, AL.

And despite what you see on tv, most racial problems in the US today are centered in the Northern states.
