  1. No any of the colleges in Alabama (community, university or private)...have waiting lists...you just have to reapply ever semester...and all of them go by G.P.A. in certain prereq's !!! However, they are pretty competitive!!
  2. I wouldn't consider 18 months accelerated....all the regular nursing programs I know of are typically 18 months...5 semesters...so I'm sure you can do and continue to work!
  3. Hi, Regina66 I'm in Alabama too...so I was wondering where did you get accepted? I was also wondering what's the pay for LPN's in Alabama...but I can't seen to find that info anywhere....
  4. B.S. in Psychology (May 04)...currently working in the field as a Childcare Counselor at a Mental Health Center...will be starting ADN soon!!!
  5. I finished college in May 04 with a B.S. in Psychology...I am currently working in my field at a Mental Health Center as a Child Care Counselor for kids in a group home setting that are dealing with emotional disorders....however the Social/Human Service field is not where I wants to be (for numerous reasons....pay & opportunities for growth are basically non-existent)...people always look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them I'm enrolling in a community college to become a nurse...but if I must say so these days what we are doing is not so uncommon...I was reading an article about the top ten jobs today and believe me when I say maybe only one of those jobs required a B.S. or B.A. degree...they only required one year certification or two year degrees...the health care field is where the jobs are....
  6. No, you can't convert a nonscience degree to a BSN degree online....you would have to go back to school about 5 more semesters to get a BSN degree or a ADN degree...but you would first need to complete all your science preq (anatomy, microbiology, physiology, chemistry, etc.) before you can even enroll in a University's nursing program OR you can try to find an accelerated BSN program which is usually like 12 months after you complete your preq!!! BSN online degrees are for nurses who already have their RN license from a community college. Good Luck with your plans!!!
  7. I have around $30000 in loans I conslidated them once I graduated and choose the graduated income plan...where your payment increases about $20.00 every two years and my payments are $100.00 to start and they max out at about $250.00....you should go to some of the loan conslidation websites and use one of their payment calculators....they usually have several different plans to choose from.
  8. Tenet Hospitals pay back student loans....
  9. DO you mind go over some of the benefits that UAB offers....
  10. I have a B.S. in Psychology...and I've also decided to go the ADN route...It's at least $12000 cheaper than the BSN and about it would take me a total of 4 semesters for ADN compared to the 8 semesters for BSN. I'll probably go back for my BSN & MSN once I'm working as a RN and let my employer pay for those degrees and it would only take like 3 semesters for each degree and I could also do it online. I would say go for the ADN now and BSN & MSN later....
  11. I will be starting nursing school in the fall...however I have many reasons for wanting to become a nurse---JOB SECURITY, JOB AVAILABILITY, THE PAY, THE FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES (3*12 shifts), STUDENT LOAN REPAYMENT, THE CHALLENGE & TO HELP OTHERS IN THEIR TIME OF NEED. No..there may not be a such thing as a rich nurse....but most nurses do make a very good salary compared to most other Associates, Bachelors & Master degree fields. Of course a Doctor, Dentist, Lawyer, Judges & Physicists ...will make more money...they spend most of their life in school --they should make more.
  12. After going over this forum I've come to the conclusion that most RN's feel that they don't make enough money...when I think you guys make a great salary when compared to other careers...especially starting out in the field. I understand how a nurse that has been in the same careers for 10 or 15 years should indeed make more than a new grad ( it's my understanding that they rarely do though)...MY QUESTION IS HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK IS A FAIR SALARY FOR A NEW NURSE? 1). 40000-45000 2). 55000-65000 3). 70000-80000 Keep in mind that NURSING is one of the very few careers where you can indeed start out making 40000 fresh out of college....
  13. I know that more than half of my May 2004 graduating class would probably kill for a job that pays 20.00/hour....I know that nurses seems to be under alot of stress but that basically comes with any job. My point is only the nurses that graduated from college with me came straight out of school and was lucky enough to find a job that pays 20.00/hour. Every other field had to pretty much settle for a job that pays around 12.00/hour (if they were lucky)!!!
  14. OK...I graduated this past May with a pretty much worthless degree in Psych...I have since decided to complete a second B.S. in Nursing starting Spring 05....the thing is I already have 39,000 student loan debt (10,000 Federal Perkins Loan which hopefully can be forgiven once I'm a Nurse) and will have to take out probably 20,000 more to complete 2 more years of Nursing School...Am I crazy for going this deep in debt...all my friends seem to think so...they don't even want to take a loan to go to school period. I consider myself having pretty good credit...I have never been late on my car payment or credit card payment etc....But my friends who are so scared of student loan debit have horrible credit and can't get anything in their name. My point is why are these people who have already ruined their credit by not paying off credit cards...so scared of taking out loans to pay for an education... I don't understand it...So I be worried like them or worry about the student loan payments when I graduate.
