Air Force nursing

Published

Hello,

I am trying to join the Air Force and am having a difficult time. The healthcare recruiter will not return my emails or calls. I met with a recruiter but the heath care professional recruiter resides out of state. I am 32, single, no kids, have a BS in heath studies and my ADN. I am two classes away from completing my BSN and have 6 years experience (med/surg charge, ER, ICU and ambulatory cardiac care). Is the reason why he is not contacting me due to not having my BSN? What steps should I take next? I really want to join-any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you reached out to the local recruiter for assistance?

Yes, the reason is the lack of BSN. You cannot move forward toward commissioning without it, so they probably won't be interested until you have it. Healthcare recruiters (as opposed to the strip mall guys) cover large regions and are inundated with people interested in military nursing. Be persistent when you are much closer to being done. Do not bother with local recruiters unless they are healthcare recruiters — healthcare recruiting is very specialized and the enlisted recruiters can't help you (and might even give you bad info because they just don't know).

When do you graduate?

Thank you for your response it is greatly appreciated. I figured as much; yet, I do have my Bachelors of Science but it is not my BSN. I am guessing this probably doesn't help me. I graduate in the Spring. Since I am two classes away from graduation should I continue to be persistent? Thanks again.

You're right, the other BS degree does not count. As I said, when you are closer to being done, you may be an attractive candidate. The spring is almost a year away, and is part of the next fiscal year so they won't even know how many slots they have until after October.

Are you hoping to come in under a certain specialty? You might consider board certification to make you a more attractive candidate. Also make sure you keep your GPA as high as possible — it really matters to the military. The military is overstrength right now, even with nurses, so it is very competitive; so you really have to stand out when you apply.

Good luck!!
