Air Force Nurse Boards Jan 2020

Published

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion board for anyone applying for the January 2020 Air Force Nurse Corps boards as I've seen a few people do this in the past and some good info has been in those discussions. Good luck to everyone in advanced!

Hey!! I'm in the process of applying! I'll be applying for NICU. I was having a hard time finding a discussion for the January board, so this is great!

2nd attempt, welp. At least my application - for the most part - stays the same.

Hi everyone! I'm applying for a OR spot. First attempt. Have yall gone to Merps yet?

Welcome! And yup, got MEPS done last summer. I went through the waiting game last board, so hoping 2nd time is easier. Thankfully I don't have to wait until next Sept to reapply so I'm grateful.

I'm going in as clinical nurse. I have an ER background but not in a "trauma" designated ER. My recruiter said I could pursue ER code if I wanted to, but regardless if I was eligible for ER or not, I did not want to do it.

I went to MEPS this past week. Everything went well. They definitely treated me a little different throughout the process, in a good way, because of being an officer candidate (I was the only one there out of about 20 people who wasn't going enlisted). Got through everything just fine but at the end, a doctor told me I was disqualified for "insomnia". I've been taking ambien as needed for 4 years, started when I was working 3 different shifts in one week in the ER. I told them I can stop taking it immediately, but didn't matter, i was DQ'd. Recruiter was pretty confident that I will get a waiver, I'm just really hoping I get it before January boards.

Anyone do their interview with a Chief Nurse yet? I'm doing mine in a few weeks. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

Yeah sometimes the docs in meps can be a bit of a douche. My doc wasn’t exactly all sparkles and rainbows, failed meps my first time and the doc wasn’t very kind about it ?

Did you check with your recruiter about remaining clinical nursing spots? I was told clinical nursing have all been filled out from last board and numbers for FY21 will come out sometime in March.

Interview with chief nurse was a breeze! More like a conversation. Your recruiter should give you some tips for the interview, if not ask! Be able to answer why AF, the mission, role in national defense, what makes them dif from the other branches, AF deployment mission, etc.

I'm in Texas and so far no word as to when I'll will go to MEPS. Kinda anxious because we are going into holidays and there wont be much time afterwards before boards. Has anyone every done a walk-in to MEPS without an appointment? I have the paperwork signed by my recruiter just no date.

You def need an appt. I showed up at meps on a date my recruiter told me to go but when I showed up I was told I wasn’t on the list and couldn’t process. I was told if I was enlisted I could get away with a walk in but officers needed an appt.

I had my meps scheduled by the navy. They were so responsive meanwhile my AF recruiter at the time took months to reply back and if left up to her, I probs would have mep scheduled .... never. Or in the year 2025.

Just heard back from my recruiter. She said there are 3 spots left for clinical, along with whatever applicants they will take as alternates in case there are candidates who change their mind or anything like that. I feel I have a pretty good packet, especially for clinical nurse, so wish me good luck!

MasalaC, where did you do your interview if you don't mind me asking? My recruiter did give me some tips and also sent me a sheet which basically seemed like a sheet for the interviewer, i.e. what questions to ask applicants. Which sounds along the lines of what you said, AF mission, deployment mission, etc. Without trying to sound like I'm trying to get an easy answer from you, what did you say in regards to what the AF role in national defense is, deployment mission, what makes AF diff from other branches. I've done a lot of research and just feel I don't have a solid answer to any of those questions so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I am applying as an FNP. Cleared both of my interviews in the past week. MEPS was cleared by the Navy last March. fingers crossed on getting in the first time. Word was only 5 FNP spots and nobody reviewed last board. So hoping to get through and back to active duty.

I won't disclose location but I simply did a google search for the answers and anything I didn't know/couldn't answer fully I asked my interviewer. So long as you did your research and show a willingness to learn, you'll be fine!
