How can a Jamaican trained nurse be recruited to work in the United States?

starting point would be having a state license and also if not already got a legal right to live and work in the US.

Some nursing homes hire foreign trained RNs and send paperwork to get a working visa.Have you heard about CGFNS? And It depends from the Board of Nursing who would evaluate your nursing credits, you would need to take TOEFL and NCLEX-RN in your country, if offered the opportunity to get a license. I heard something about it, but I do not know about it.

Thanks Toyota Lpn. I heard about cgfn also but my source has minimal info also. Wish you could have given me more info though but thanks for taking the time out to reply.

To be honest, given the glut of homegrown nurses looking for work, a lot of employers are not actively recruiting foreign nurses...not when they have nurses here who are citizens, are legally able to live and work in the US, and could start yesterday. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's what it is.

I know there is a hospital in North Dakota that did recruit foreign nurses...I don't know if they still are though. I can't recall the name of it but there's a thread at AN discussing it so you will have to search for it.

And I agree with Silverdragon: do what you can to make yourself legally able to live and work in the US, as well as get a state license, and you will look a lot more attractive to employers.

Certainly before the great recession, many hospitals recruited foreign nurses (usually with agency help) en masse. All the way up to Johns Hopkins. I expect there is still some foreign recruitment going on as there is still visa availability. The advantage is that they come on long term contracts of 18 months to 3 years, and the overall cost is less than local nurses. Physicians usually enjoy the complete respect and control they get from many foreign trained nurses versus the typical US trained nurse and they often have a large say in hospital practices.

To the original poster I might suggest contacting an agency like O'Grady Peyton (who specializes in overseas recruitment) to discuss possibilities. No matter the agency, be very careful, their contracts often have large penalties if you don't follow through. OGP used to have a cancellation penalty of $15,000. You might also check with a Jamaican school of nursing, I'd bet they would know if there are agencies with a local presence in Jamaica.

Per the previous advice, if you can go through the licensing process by yourself, you will be more widely employable and make more money than going through an agency for assistance with the process.

Alot of companies are still recruiting foreign nurses.........i know persons who recenlty were recruited from the caribbean. Here is a list of recruiting companies AVANT HEALTH CARE, MED PRO STAFFING, ADEX MEDICAL STAFFING. Google their info and call them to find out more.All the best. They are the best. Some of my friends from the cariibean recently came up from the caribbean who did the process with them
