After graduation, how do you find a job? (LVN)

Published

I am planning on working in LTC once I graduate, but I'm unsure of how to find a job. I have never done a job search before (pathetic, I know). I got married at 18, and have been a stay-at-home mom since then. So now, 11 years later, I'm about to enter the workforce for the first time and I dont' know how to find a job. Do you just walk into local LTC facilities and ask if they're hiring? Did your school do any type of job fairs for new grads?

Here are various ways to find work:

1. Look online for jobs at websites such as CareerBuilder.com Jobs - The Largest Job Search, Employment & Careers Site

2. Walk into healthcare facilities and apply in person Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. These are the hours that managers will usually be there.

3. Look in the employment section of your local newspaper for jobs

4. Attend job fairs. Recruiters are usually abundant at job fairs.

5. Network with friends and acquaintances.

Although you most likely will not need one for LVN jobs, create a resume. For help with this, there are many books at the bookstore or library. Sometimes there are free seminars at local colleges or the employment department. Write down essential info on a piece of paper that you will need for the job application even though you haven't worked. You will need the names and contact info of your references, names, dates, addresses of schools and places where you volunteered, etc. Try to get instructors from your school to vouch for you as professional references since you don't have a work history. Your best bet for that first job is to go in person. Be prepared to interview on the spot, so don't go to a prospective employer dressed in jeans. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice. I actually have a resume, but it's pretty bare. I have almost 3 years of volunteer work with Meals On Wheels though and that is working with the elderly, so maybe that will help?
