This info may be in past threads but I can't seem to find it...so I appologize for redundancy.
Which bases offer new grad nurse transition programs? I know of Travis, Elmendorf, and Wright-Pat. Any more?
Thanks so much. You guys rock!
I just found out that I will be attending NTP in Cincinnati, but being assigned to Langley in OB. I am excited about that, but how does the family move work? I have a military spouse and a dependant. Will I get BAH to pay for my home here in IL (where I am currently), while I am in COT and NTP? Where will I stay while I am in NTP? Thanks!!
Usually you stay in dorms at COT and I think you will be able to stay on base for NTP as well since it is not the same place as your PDS. Don't know what to do with spouse and kids cause I don't have any.
Sorry to change subjects but does anyone know why so many bases are closing down completely or transforming into clinics? Scott (the base closes to me right now) is closing down as a hospital and will be just a clinic. Seems like AF nurse officers will be out of jobs next year...

AF nurses aren't going to be out of job anytime soon. The military ,via BRAC, is realigning bases and creating larger regional military medical centers/hospitals. National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed, Landstuhl, WH/Ft Sam Houston are all becoming joint or tri-service bases that will or are open to AF nurses.
NTP is a TDY so your family stays back at home (wherever that was before you came into the military) until you are done with NTP. Depending on where your NTP training is (Wright Patterson AFB is in Dayton Ohio) your family can come visit, but the government won't pay for them to come visit.
To The Little Greek,I think I asked you for some advise in the past. I just found out that I will be attending NTP in Cincinnati, but being assigned to Langley in OB. Just to clarify, when you say you have a "military spouse" do you mean your spouse is actually IN the military? Small detail, but an important one.
I didn't go to NTP so I'm not too sharp on those details. When I went to COT my family stayed behind in Texas for a few weeks but then packed up and moved to Virginia while I was at COT. I had to give my husband Power of Attorney to be able to coordinate everything but that wasn't difficult. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that your BAH will be paid at the rate for the state in which your family is residing while you are gone. Perhaps someone who has gone through NTP and left family in their home state could verify this.
Let me be the first to congratulate you on your assignment to Langley. It's a great place to learn OB--busy unit, awesome providers and nurses, great experiences, and a soon-to-be new hospital.
I am deploying this summer and will be gone from July 2010 through January 2011. Any chance you will arrive before July? Even if you won't, I'm happy to help you with any questions about the area or any OB/hospital related questions.
Thanks for getting back to me. I haven't been on this site in a while. Thank you for the info. I won't be to Langley until Dec 10. I go to NTP from Sept -Dec. I was stationed at Langley about 5 years ago...I am under the AECP and my husband is enlisted. I am looking forward to starting in OB at Langley. I have always wanted to do OB, so I was relieved that there was a slot for me. Well I look forward to meeting you when you get back from your deployment. I may get back to you before you go for some "sponsor type" info, if that's ok with you?? Thanks again!

You are more than welcome to PM me any time! My deployment was canceled and I will be PCSing instead. I leave for Alaska late July so I won't be at LAFB when you arrive. That's not to say that I can't answer questions for you though.
LAFB is a great assignment for OB! The nurses, providers, anesthesia and OR teams are awesome. We do about 100 deliveries per month and are ranked #2 for deliveries in the AF (at least that was the last I heard). You'll be working in the new hospital which is super nice. I'm convinced I'll never work a day there, but I've seen the rooms and they are amazing. We are going from LDRs to LDRPs. It's going to be a change, but by the time you arrive things should be well into full swing.
LOL! I know the feeling. I was envious every time someone told me they were going or had been assigned there. When I came in it was my first choice but got LAFB instead. In my first meeting with my CN I told her that aside from my goal to work as an OB CNS, I desperately wanted to make my next assignment AK. Well she remembered, and after 2 years TOS I got the call saying I'd be heading out this summer! Just like my mom used to say, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil". I'm so stoked! I've already started planning because I have only three months to go.

YAY FOR YOU!!!! I'm very happy for you! I love hearing when the military makes things go someone's way - I love it when senior officers and NCOs make things happen for other officers or airmen!
Enjoy and let me know how it is!
