My husband and I are sooooo excited about moving to Anchorage!! We are looking into neighborhoods and schools for our daughter. The problem is no one has called me back for a job. It has only been a week but I guess I thought someone would have called by now. I applied to seven RN positions that were open until filled in Anchorage at the Alaska Native Medical Center. I am limited to locations because I am trying to get the IHS loan repayment.
I don't know if the facility has a true need as advertised or if they haven't called because I am from out of state (North Carolina). It may also look bad that I only have nine months of med surg experience. I am hoping someone calls me back soon because no job then no move.
Does anyone know if the facility hires out of state and if they are in need of nurses? I wish I were in Alaska already!!
SOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING!!

Do you have a AK nursing license yet? I applied for a position on their website and they called about a week later. The HR director is very friendly and I suggest you call her and check the status of your application. You might also want to try CPOL (civilian personal online) they list job opening on the Airforce and Army base in Anchorage. Career-Builder, Alaska also has lots of current nursing positions available. I just got up here a month ago and love it!
Thanks rockymnthoney.
I actually have some decisions to make now that I recieved two offers! One of the positions offered is in the bush and the other in the city.
I was a bit discouraged to know that IHS facilities in the cities are not accepting new Commission Corps but are instead referring them to the rural areas. I wouldn't mind a rural area if I were single but I have a family to think about.
I have a lot of thinking to do...
Good luck! Alaska is breath-taking no matter where you end up. I personally couldn't live outside the city for longer than a few months but from what I hear the "bush" is beautiful and the people are wonderful. Your family will be fine no matter where you settle.

The "bush" people are wonderful. I lived in Kotzebue for about 13 years and in Kenai for 2. Alaska is a BEAUTIFUL place. When I am done with school, I would like to head up there again for awhile. Good luck and I know you will love the state.

How was it living in Kotzebue?
Would my family and I have any problems in a rural area in Alaska being a African American? I only ask because my husband and I have had people refuse us service in a rural area here in the southern states. I know this is a touchy subject but I just have to ask for my family and self. I know from experience that some people here in the south are very ignorant to change and other cultures, especially in areas where there are little to no diversity. My husband and I are very open to learning other cultures and we are very excited to get to know the people there.

Be very careful and think very long and hard about Alaska. They will court you and promise you paradise but travel out of the state is very expensive and dependent on the weather so if you want to get home you may not be able.
These companies will move you up but you are on your own to get back
As far as the charming people in the Bush,if you are at a native hospital expect verbal abuse and lack of manners worse than any inner city hospital in the lower 48.
My advise is travel there 1st so you have escape funds available and talk to nurses not recruiters where you are thinking of going.
One more thing is there is a Native preference for hiring and while that may not effect an RN it will make things tough on a spouse seeking employment
We are out of here soon
