Advise about cancelling interview

Published

I'm a nurse and have applied for a permanent job after being agency for years. Have an interview this week.

Split up with husband and I'm now relying on my parents to mind my children whenever they are free.

I did not know this would be the case when I applied and in my application I did say flexibility due to childcare would be an issue so I requested set days.

So my query if I go to the interview and get asked when I can work.... I don't know. My parents tell me their free days the following week and I do agency. How could this possibly work in permanent work and should I just withdraw my application?

At my hospital our schedules are set 6-8 weeks in advance. Waiting until the week before is not an option. Even the PRN schedules are done 2-3 weeks in advance to fill in any holes. We have a float pool that fills in any gaps from call ins. If there are no last minute gaps they get floated to ER (who seems to always be under staffed).

Go to the interview and see how their schedules are actually set up (self-schedule, set days, rotating, etc) and then talk with you parents and see what they say. If you really want this job you may need to look into more permanent child care solutions other than your parents or you may just need to stay agency until life calms down for you.

Did you apply specifically for FT or is it PRN/Pool type work? Depending on the needs of the facility if you can at least book the minimum in advance (which could be as little as a shift a month)and then let them know that you will have more availability that you will let them know about a week in advance, then it may work IF they have a need. I have a similar situation as daycare does not accommodate 12 hour shifts and I can't risk a nanny/babysitter going MIA when school lets out and my child needs to be picked up when I'm at work for a 12 hour shift.

FT and PT positions are usually not flexible enough as they will want to know your availability and schedule you when they schedule everyone else which from what I've seen is typically almost a month in advance or more.
