Advice on traveling?

Looking to take another travel assignment soon. I've only done one assignment, and still nervous about what to expect. It was a pretty bad experience, even though it was in Hawaii. I'm interested in any advice I can get on anything from the phone interview to negotiating with the travel company, good hospitals to work for, basically any tips and advice i can get. I've read a good bit online, but it's always nice to hear about individual experiences!

What was bad about your experience?

To start off with, the hospital told the recruiter it was 12 hour night shifts, ended up 8 hour days and being called off 30 min before shift. All the time. The manager trying to make me take ten patients, when everyone else had half that. But the worst part was being treated so terribly because of my race. I never, ever, in my life experienced such hateful treatment from another human being. All the nurses were nice to me, most were locals, and they were wonderful. None cared too much for these two particular managers either, but didn't receive quite the treatment i did, being they were in the union. One of the managers actually accused me of treating a patient badly, which I would never do. I ended up sobbing to my recruiter on the phone and she got me out of my last couple of weeks. I'll never forget what she did to me, but I'm not going to let one persons actions stop me from traveling and doing what I love to do, taking care of people.

I'm sorry you had a tough experience. I hope your next one is much better. For your next contract, get the shift/hours specified in the contract, so they can't flip it on you.

That really sucks! But I'm happy that you aren't letting them stop you. I've never had any bad travel experiences thus far :) I'm also amazed that your recruiter got u out without any penalty. Nice!! Hang in there, it will get better

Awww sorry that you had that experience for a first time traveler, it must be discouraging but it gets better. Do more research on the hospitals you are going to, make sure you get other travelers feedback from it. Lay out your demands before you sign a contract with any agencies. At least you were not penalized for ending it early but most agencies wont let that happen. good luck.
