Hi,

I wanted to get some advice, I am a new grad, and have done bedside nursing for about 6 months, and i do enjoy it but i don't really picture myself being there forever. I would really rather go down more a business, ccac case manager, government type of job, but as a new grad i feel that it would be hard to get those positions. I am just wondering how i can achieve these goals, if i should go back to school for something? Does anyone have any similar experiences?

Do you think it would be possible to just shadow a case manager to get more knowledge

Start by reading job postings for CCAC case managers/care coordinator and government type of jobs. Most of those types of job postings specify at least two years experience. What type of facility are you currently working in? Are you getting experience with discharge planning? Discharge planning is an important skill for CCAC case managers. Are you working with patients who have experienced work related injuries? Expereince with injured patients could help if applying for a government job such as WSIB case manager.

Keep slogging away at the bedside a bit longer. All the jobs you mentioned require experience.

Agencies like WeCare, etc will hire you but it's a lot of responsibility for someone with limited experience

When you say government, what do you mean? Corrections, the military, Indian Affairs?

You might get to know some of the bed managers in your facility to see what they do.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

You would definitely need to have more experience to be able to do the jobs you have mentioned. They require judgement that comes from experience.

Specializes in geriatrics.

You will require 2-3 years of bedside experience at a minimum in order to be considered for those roles.

thanks everyone
