I think one way to get an idea of what you might be call to do is try to answer the following question:

What nursing area you would never go into?

If there are nursing areas you are 200% sure you never would want to go into and you never have any real experience in it... watch out... fate sometimes have a really weird sense of humor and you might just ended up there and loving it...

Most important piece of advice I can offer: You can't really knowwhat kind of nursing you want to do until you've done it. There's so much out there, and I've seen, firsthand, nurses that are miserable, and I believe it's because they came out of school into a position where they've stayed for years, afraid to venture out and see what there is they might have actually enjoyed. Don't be afraid to try something different if your first position is not giving you the reward and satisfaction you expected to received once out of nursing school.

I totally agree with you... I'm still within my first year of nursing. I followed the advice of many of my instructors at school and started out in med-surg. While I wouldn't trade the wealth of knowledge I've gained for anything, I absolutely HATE my job. I'm trying to make the year marker before looking elsewhere, though. But it's such a mistake to not look for something else within nursing if you're not happy where you're at...

I'm hoping and praying that I will find a job I love where I can again actually spend time with my patients and be able to teach... I like the commercials Johnsons & Johnsons has... although I don't think it's a realistic perception in what my experience has been... =/
