How long the evaluation for RN (NY State) take?

Hi Suzanne,

I'm new here. I am Japanese in US and trying to obtain the NY State RN license. Could you plese tell me how long the evaluation for RN (New York State) take?

I applied for NY RN licensure and CGFNS Credentials Verification Service for NY State this February. CGFNS received all the required documents and sent them to NY State Board of Nursing in September. When I asked NY State Board of Nursing, they told me that the evaluation would be completed about 3~4 weeks . However I recently found that they even haven't started to evaluate my case. They told me that they are waiting my transcript, which was sent to translator and they have no idea when the transcript coming back.

Now I am calling them every day and checking my application status but there is no progress and their answer is always the same. I am very confused and frustrated with this situation. I really want to know how long the evaluation process (NY State) should be taken.

If someont has same experience to me, please tell me how long did you spend for your evaluation!

Thank you.

I had a long initial battle with the cgfns programme, but once I switched to NY & credentials evaluations and applied for NYBON, it was done very quickly. Definitely the way that worked for me.

Starbin, maybe you could call them up again and clarify whether or not you really still need to apply for CVS. Like Suzanne said, if you don't have the actual license from CA then you aren't really endorsing but actually applying for initial licensure.

I'm curious on what the lady said. Does this mean that whether or not its initial licensure or endorsement, as long its a foreign grad, you still have to apply for the CVS? This is kind of redundant. I can understand if its from CA (since they do their own evaluation) but how about those from states endorsing w/c used CES ??

You have a very interesting case esp. to those who are having 2nd thoughts on CA and those who's agencies promise them they can work on another state eventhough CA won't give the actual license.

In consolation, you're already in NY and you can call them up or visit them anytime. Just hope that when you eventually apply for CVS they won't do the requesting from the school and licensing body stuff anymore since you already have a file in CGFNS. This took JonRNMD 2mos.

Keep us updated. Best of luck to you. :)

Thank you Lawrence!

In fact, I do not have a license yet. But I called the NYBON just after sending my application and asked if I need a CVS for Licensure by endorsement. She said yes. And I again asked her to clarify " Do I still need a CVS if I already have a license in another state or may be two or three states?". She said,"Yes Maam if your Nursing education was completed outside the US". And just few days ago I came to know that CABON sent my NCLEX/License information to NY.

Oh no.

There goes my dream of endorsing to NY.

:o

If you take a look at the NY application for endorsement, there is no place on it that requires the CVS. That is only for initial licensure, same thing with other states that require the CES.

You can still work in NY if you want to, and you can get petitioned for a job there. The only issue is that you will not be able to endorse until after you have the job offer and a SSN#.

:rotfl: But do you like snow that much?

Wow, things are so confusing.

Anyway, I'll just wait for my long-delayed ATT and hopefully take & pass the NCLEX. That'll get me a license card.

Suzanne, how do I get a SSN after that? Or can I endorse to NY with only the license card?

(If you remember, I'm from the school which has problems with the CVS...some graduates had been waiting for their ATT for 14 months already. They gave up and applied for California. They're there now.)

No, not snow...but the holy grail for photographers is in New York, B & H. Long have I waited to saunter along its corridors. :chuckle

You will not get the actual hard license until you give the number to CA BRN. Once the immigration procedure has been completed, and you are in the US, you can go into the Social Security office and apply for one. It usually takes about one week, but you can get a number assigned to you in a day, if you need to.

I am confused, are you going thru NY for initial licensure? If so, you will get a license from them and will not have to endorse. Sorry, but it is hard for me to keep everything straight. Too many that I work with on a continuous basis.

For all of the issues with endorsing to others states, or wanting to, this only reinforces my initial statement fo going to NY for initial licensure, then you can easily endorse to any other state. All of my students did that and the ones that are over in the US, are working in CA, and endorses without any issues whatsoever. There is a reason for what I keep telling all of you to do.

Suzanne, sorry if the question is in the wrong thread; but since we are talking NYBON. Is there a timeframe; after receiving ATT to sit the NCLEX exam? :uhoh3: I have been hesitant to register with Pearson as my job keeps me running all over the globe and from some assignments I am not able to travel and do the test. Thank You for advice and sorry if the answer is already posted somewhere. Geena

you are right suzanne !! there is no place for cvs in the application for endorsement because it is designed as a general form for us graduates as well as foreign graduates. and for us grads, the school will send the nursing education form(form 2) to bon. and for ny grads, all the information is already there in the bon so the applicants do not even have to send the form 2 to their school. but for foreign graduates, they have clearly written that board needs a cvs from cgfns. it does not specifically say that cvs is needed only for initial licensure. nybon had sent me an application packet, there is a check list which states that foreign graduates need cvs for endorsement also. i have a friend who passed nclex from missouri (she had a cg certificate also) signed a job with ny employer but had to wait for another 9 months to endorse her license. she had the ssn too.she could not work in ny as an rn during that time. cvs was the only thing that took time. theoritically, cgfns says 6 months but practically they take a lot of time.

Yes, once you actually pay the fee to Pearson-Vue and receive the ATT, it is good for only 90 days.

Your approval to sit for the exam is good for one year from most states. This meaning being able to register with Pearson-Vue.

I agree with Suzanne. I also suggest all foreign nurses to apply to NY for initial licensure. It will take time initially but it will save you alot of time in the future. Anytime during your nursing career if you wanted to work in NY you need to go through the CVS. if you already have it for your initial licensure..u would not have to worry.

Second thing, as Suzanne had alyways told, the same document collected by CGFNS can be used for Visa screen also. i recommend NY for initial licensure. And the best part is NY gives you a hard license without SSN.

Thank You Suzanne,:)

I had better register then; I would hate to start this all over again!!!!

Hello everyone! What happens if CGFNS failed to get all the documents in time? Will the NY-BON contact me regarding these documents? And how long would be the possible delay? I´ve applied for CVS-NY about 8 month ago, and my status is "ready for review", despite the fact that they are still waiting for my license validation. My license authority hasn`t even recieved a letter from CGFNS! Thank you very much for any advice.
