Advice about nursing school

First, Congratulations on getting into nursing school. :yeah:I too had been out of school for over 15 years and I am a mother of 2. I graduate from LPN school July 23rd! My advice would be to keep your eyes on the prize. Nursing school is not the easiest but its doable (obviously). Stay focused on your goal of becoming an LPN. Know that it requires A LOT of your time and your going to feel guilty for not giving your full time and attention to your family but keep in mind its not going to be forever. I have been out of high school for 15 years and then started having a family right away. I have 4 kids and I have been running a child care center out of my home. I am getting very burnt out and want a change. I just got accepted into a nursing program and start August 30th. I am very nervous. I don't know what to expect. I know that it's going to be hard but I am up for the challenge. The program I am going to do is a 15 month program. I am going to make alot less than I am doing child care, but I am so excited about doing this job. All of my family is in a medical type field. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I assume your program required at a minimum Introduction to A&P as a prereq.

That being the case, I believe your learning will flow smoothly if you review each body system that you learned in A&P. My program has gone over all of the systems we learned in A&P. The only difference? In nursing school, you learn to connect what you learned in A&P - how the structures work - to disease processes. So, a strong knowledge in A&P will benefit you greatly. I unfortunately only took A&P Intro for my program, and the students that had Chemistry, A&P 1 & 2, and Microbiology hit the ground running circles around me. I had to study extra hard, but with myself having one of the highest grades in Med-Surg, I can say it's not impossible!

Congratulations on getting accepted into NS! Our paths are similar....I too ran a daycare from my home and have 4 children of my own. I know how the 'burn out' feeling comes at you. I am 42 on June 1st, which will be my first day of NS. I cannot wait, and yet, I am filled with such mixed emotions. Best of luck to you!

Congrats on getting accepted!

My advice is to follow your syllabus and read ahead. Then during lecture, you will be reinforcing what you just read and retaining faster. Keep track of your notes- stay organized- and keep reading. When you get something wrong on a test, review it and relearn it. Try group study, it may help you.
