Advice needed for transferring master's programs

Published

I did my BS in nursing at Columbia and have done 2 of 3 years toward my Adult NP degree at NYU and have been on leave for 1 1/2 years. For a variety of reasons I'm thinking about transferring to another program as I would like to do Family NP instead (which NYU does not have). I have 2 concerns/questions:

1) Does anyone have any idea about programs that will accept the bulk of my credits? I cannot bear to essentially start over with this much work under my belt.

2) Along those lines, I'm wondering if there may be a BSN to DNP program that would offer me advanced standing.

I would prefer to stay in NYC, but for a great program I may consider moving. Given the schools I've attended I'm sure I'm almost out of student loan money (groan) so I have to be really smart about balancing a good school with the amount of time and money it will take to finish the program.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

(sorry if you're seeing this as a double post--I don't think I put it in the correct place initially!)

Hi RNAndrea!

Someone I know is interested in the same program you are and I know she was looking into Seton Hall University and Rutgers University. They seem to have pretty good grad programs, maybe you want to look into it....

I'm trying to get into NYU BSN anfd I did not know Columbia had an undergrad in nursing. Can I ask you how did you like it? Any suggestions? I want to have other options in case NYU doesn't work out.

Thanks and I hope this helps!

Kika

Hey Kika,

Columbia technically does not have undergraduate nursing, but they have ETP for people with another degree in something else. That is what I did and left after the BS/RN portion (1/2 of my class did not stay on immediately and finish the MS/NP). Hope that helps and best of luck to you!

Well if I were you I would just finish the MSN program and then at later date apply for entrance into an MSN-completion program.

However, I do understand why you want to start again and get your FNP.

I do know that both Pace and Columbia both have FNP programs. Other schools in the metro area have an FNP program as well but those programs are not as prestigious ( Lehman, LIU-Brooklyn, SUNY Downstate, College of New Rochelle).

Maybe you should think about just finishing at NYU. I don't think that another school is going to take so much of your credits particularly since you were on the Adult NP track.

Have you considered going back to NYU?
