Good day Nurses!

I'm a nurse currently working in the Middle East who just got hired by Newcastle NHS Hospitals. I'm informed that I'll be starting as a pre-registered nurse for about a month then I'd be band 5 after registration ( £21,000 ). Since I'm currently enjoying a tax free salary, I'm confused if I'll make this move or not.

Can anyone tell me what would probably be my gross salary be minus the tax and rent and other expenses?

Will the unsocial hours and weekend extra pay make a significance?

Is there ever a chance of continuing education (Masters)?

I'm really really out of my mind and torn between money vs professional growth. I can move easily to the UAE and get lots of money but wouldn't the health care system be the same? I'd appreciate any help.

Newcastle is one of the cheaper cities to live in, but you will need to check out rents for yourself.

Try Gumtree.

You will get additional unsocial hours payments, which will add to your pay, but the unsocial hours tend to be sought after, and you will have to figure out what your team does in terms of allocating them.

Bank shifts are paid at more or less the same rate as full-time, they don't get paid at an overtime rate.

I would also research the climate. Coming from the Middle East you might be in for a shock!

If you are purely interested in money then stay where you are!

You will get a starting salary as they have told you. Weekends, unsocial hours and night rates can be added on but only if you actually work them - if you are in clinics for example you work Monday to Friday with no extras.

It is up to you to complete any further education you want, simply apply to the university and see what courses are available to get your MSc. but YOU have to do it, your employer may swap shifts around and give some help (study time/days etc.) but they are under no obligation to do so.

I would have though you should be aware of your options before applying - if you have accepted the job then you have a finite time to give in your notice and then make arrangements to come to the UK.
