Me and DH just moved back to Canada a few months ago. There is A LOT to do, and several hoops to jump through. Maybe if you have more specific questions, I can help.

When we moved home from the US we used a moving company that specializes in moving across the border. Expensive but worth every penny! Basically if you are doing this yourself with a trailer or truck you need to document everything you own (and I mean everything!) and have that list available at the boder when you cross. Contact the Canadian Customs and Immigration and they will tell you all you need to have.
Be prepared and things will go smoothly.
Good luck!

We moved ourselves, and had no problem. You just need to be organized and have your ducks in a row.

we moved on October of 2004 to Montreal from Texas, hired Allied (moving company) they were great, expensive too, but worth every penny. Only one plate broke and it was becuse we didn't wrap it very well. It took 2 or 3 weeks, for all the stuff to get here. They pick it up and they drop it off at your place and place it in the room that it belongs. The only thing is that once it got here we had to go to customs once the stuff arrived to Montreal.
I would highly recommend the company, at least you can start with an estimate to see if it worth it. The reason that we choose the moving company instead of doing it ourselves was becuse San Antonio, Texas is to far south of US that with gas hotel and everything, it was going to cost about the same. And, the other reason was that Uhaul was asking us to return the truck to a US location.
Good luck

We just moved from TX to Alberta and used a company that hauls business items to the US and instead of returning to Canada with empty trucks, they hire local movers to pack and load their trailer. It is SiGNIFICANTLY cheaper to do it this way than to hire the mover yourself (Allied, etc). Allied quoted us $16K USD to move our house contents with us packing the boxes and having them ready. This company moved all of our stuff (I ended up packing everything myself anyway) for $11K CAD ($8800 USD). They will also haul vehicles. They do all of the paperwork and all you have to do is show up at customs to claim your load.
Let me know if you are interested and I will find their name- they subcontract drivers (ours was out of Ontario). Our stuff got there (Alberta) safe and sound last week!

PS: you do know that you don't pay GST on anything that is personal (unless ONE item is over $10K CAD), if you import a vehicle- it must be Canadian Black Book valued at under $10K CAD or you will have to pay GST on the difference). It also needs to be equipped with daytime running lights and inspected by the province when it arrives.
I also have the instructions to find the Canadian Black Book values on the web if you are interested.
