Advice for Medsurg/Tele

Specialties Med-Surg

Published

I am officially a gradute nurse. I graduated May 21 with my BSN. I will be starting on a medsurg/tele floor in the beginning of july. I was hired onto the floor where I had my senior practicum. I would appreciate any advice on organizing and time management, and any othe advice. The position alternates between days and evenings, 8 hour shifts.

Specializes in Certified Med/Surg tele, and other stuff.

Make a sheet up ahead of time that you can make copies of. Include things like a place for name, diagnosis, code status, labs, IV's diet, activity and room for the misc stuff..foley, central line, med times.

All I can do is tell you what I did all these years. I would listen to report, and priortize who was going to be the problem child on my shift, lol. I would then, after hearing report, make my rounds. I have no idea how your floor is set up, but I would go around with the CNA. We would do vitals together, turn or potty people. It would give me an extra set of hands, and I would see vitals early in the morning. I could also asses them during this time.

After making rounds, I would check my Meds, and labs.

Make a timeline of when things are due at your facility. Accuchecks, meals, when labs are usually processed, and of course med times. This will help you keep organized.

Good luck and congrats on your new job! You will fall into a routine within a week and it won't seem so daunting.

As my username says "Tell me 'bout tele"

I have been a nurse since 2007, however I am new to Telemetry. I have med/surg background. Just accepted a tele position.

Look forward to all responces and thanks to all!
