hi all,
i graduate in 2 weeks from the lvn/lpn program. it seems like there isn't really any chance to work in an acute setting. i'm afraid of that cause it may sound awful but i don't want to work in a skilled nursing facility. i'm one of the top students in my class (i don't know how that happened) but it seems like every job i can find is looking for someone experienced in an acute setting for atleast a year but i don't see how i would be able to get into an acute setting. does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how or what to do that would help out. i did the lvn/lpn program before the rn because i have 2 kids and i wanted to work while i go to school. thanx alot in advance :plsebeg:

Hi and welcome,
It largely depends on where you live. In my area DC/Balto. there are some hospital jobs available for LPNs but like we all know the majority of work is in LTC, doctors offices, schools etc. Do you remember any clinical sites that had LPNs working on the floor? That is where I would start and if you don't have any luck I'd just suck it up and find a nice LTC facility to get started and get some experience. Good luck, Jules

I understand where you are coming from with LTC, I am there also. Have you checked into Home health?

You should reconsider the LTC-at least on the "skilled" unit. You can do that for 6 months, PRN since you have kids, and get TONS of experience you would normally get somewhere else. I did exactly that. I worked in an office for 1 year (hated it) after LPN school, had my 3rd baby, then did PRN work at the local LTC facility (skilled unit). Now I'm in the transition program and will be an RN in December. If I hadn't have done the LTC thing for 6 months, I would be totally lost right now. I actually liked the work, because I was in charge of so much and had so soo much experience while there. I hope my summer clinicals will help me decide where I want to end up!
OH-BTW-LTC pays beautifully too! The PRN schedule is wonderful with small children at home..
