Advice about looking for a first job out of school

Published

I'm graduating in a month and I'm really nervous about looking for/finding a job. Can anyone give me advice about how they got their first job out of school? I need some encouragement! Thanks in advance.

where is the best place to work coming out of lpn school? home health, hospitals, or nursing homes.

Just my personal opinion, but I don't think that any new graduate is ready for home health. I believe you need hospital or LTC experience before trying to work alone in home health situations.

Although I am not a nurse I can advice that the first thing you should do is have an immaculate resume (error free and proper format and with a cover page :) ), you won't believe the amounts of resume's that get filed in the nearest trashed can for simple spelling errors etc....

Also, you might want to post it online in various sites as well as mailing in and in person. Having letters of reference available and and ask people if they are able to be references and write down all their info and keep it in your bookbag. :p

I wish you the best of luck. :)

I agree with Jessica..

Just do anything to get your name and interest out there, and if the fish you want doesnt bit then I would suggest doing volunteer work at the facility you want to work in. While there make it known you are also looking for future employment.

I heard that for LPN's the best job to find right out of school is Home Care

In my personal experience I do not think that is true! Home care requires a lot of experience & knowledge. You are literally flying solo! Albeit, you can call your supervisor if you need to, but there is no gaurantee that they will answer! Not a very good situation for a new grad...

As a new grad LPN I started in a hospital. I make more on the hour than several other new grad LPN's I know. And that's not even taking into account the beau coupe benefits I get (good insurance, excellent training, excellent tuition reimbursement program, etc..)!

Hi meanbird,

How are you doing? Well I emailed about 40 resumes on career builder and monster. Mostly on carreer builder. they have like 3 pages of employmnet opps for lpn q24 hours!for Jersey!

I would e mail them my cover letter personalized for that facility, or contact person along with my resume. worked well I gat call backs though from nearly all that I faxed to. I have intervied with like 5 potential employers, two I got the job but it just wasnt right for me either money wise or hours or distance. One never even called back and one was a dream job! I accepted and had to turn down my interview for the next day. Good luck I have been looking since I was still in school. Graduated on june 16th. I didnt even test yet for boards. And it is ok to hold out for something that is perfect for you. If you are patient and persistant you will find it. Do not forget names of those you spoke to on the phone cause these people could be great contacts for you in the future. And dont be afraid to email or call back just to make sure they got your info and to let them know you interst and passion!GOOD LUCK YOu will find something just perfect for you!!!!!!! XO
